First Grow Ever!

Ok, hi all, I received some seeds-(Northern lights) from Nirvana about a week ago, I just had an urge out of nowhere to try and grow my own stuff. I will post ever couple of days w/ pics and hopefully get help if I run into any problems which im sure i will.

Did a couple days of research and decided I would go with a simple setup in my closet. Have a TV stand that I will use as my growing stand/box. Surrounded the inside of the box w a white sheet, right now i am using 3 30W cfl's, scotts soil, made one of those home made co2 generators. I have another 4ft 40W fleuro that i might try and fit into the box somehow, or i might just go and get a couple more cfl's.

Also got some fox farm nuts, the big grow(i think), for vegging and the big bloom for flowering. so far i have been giving the plants bottled water w/ spray bottle. planted them 3 days ago, and i think they are about 1 or 2 inches tall right now.

right now i have only one concern- when i water, if i get the plants wet right now, is it true they will burn if i water under the lights(i have lights on 24/7 right now)??

I cant wait to see how they turn out, i check on them like 12 times a day, and it seems like they get bigger every time i check.

fluros wont burn plants...I think U should be fine just dont overwater

be careful, fl's will burn plants just like cfl's will. if new growth touches it, it will burn. keep that in mind

am i going to need to get some more lights? dont want to grow anything big, but dont want dead plants either.

looks like you got it going good there. what are your plans for when they get bigger? do you pH water? are you planning on using nutes? are you going to switch your lighting or going to use cfl's the whole way through. you are going to need another cfl when you transplant so each tree can have their own light source. thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated! made some changes. i moved my growroom from the old tv stand in my closet to an old dresser i had( more discreet) in my closet. i surrounded the inside with a white cotton blanket, didmt want to paint-too smelly, and too lazy to tape up aluminum, have a little fan now too.

AllMeat, I did buy some nutrients at the local hydroponics store. I got foxfarm big grow for growing and big bloom for flowering. im planning on using cfls all the waqy through, might get some warm light cfl's for flowering as opposed to the cool light ones im using now.

yeah i do ph my water, i use ph strips- like I said im on a budget. its been raining here the past couple days in socal, and i set up a large cooler outside and collected a bunch of rainwater that i may use starting the next watering- ph measured somewhere between 6 and 7- hard to tell with the ph strips. but i heard rain water is good, is that true?

right now i am lighting 24/7, and the big question i have, is can i switch to 18/ 6, (im on day 3), so theyve been at 24/7 for a couple days now. u guys think that 18/6 is better or what cuz i have no idea?????

Check out my pics, the plants are growing SO fast, i think the co2 helped alot, and also the guy at the hydro store told me to add a quarter dose of foxfarm biggrow to the grow and that was back when they hadnt even come above ground level, i did that and it seemed to help. I probably wont give nutes again for like another week atleast.

you guys think it might work? looks like the easiest one to build thats for sure, cheapest too.

the grow big is going to do you fine during during veg, but the big bloom is an inhancer. it is to be used with tiger and big. it is in no way able to use just as a flower nutes fyi. ya cant go wrong with rain water afterall that is what they get outside and that is where nature intended them to grow. you can switch to 18/6 with no problem. i don't agree with nutes that early but if it worked for you then hell yeah. you should follow a feeding schedule of one week nutes on week water. a good time to switch into flowering too is when your trees need a nute feeding. give them a quarter dose of the grow big and a quarter dose of the flower nute and it makes a good and nonstressfull transition into flowering.

i wouldn't use that filter just cuz it looks like it would fall apart. if you are looking at the least expensive way take a look at this. Ryoko Builds a DIY Activated Carbon Filter - 30 Minutes, $30 Dollars - The Garden's Cure

it has been posted here before and it would be effective. I would suggest going into our DIY section under general growing and seeing ours then make your decision on what direction you are willing to go. remember you can modify either one to fit your needs.

switched to 18/6. AllMeat, when you say one week nuts one week water, does that mean do nutes mixed in the water for a week straight no matter how many times i water that week, then just plain water for a week straight? also, would you recommend having something to read the humidity levels? cuz i dont have one and have no idea what the level is at generally on an average socal day.

sry about stating that. I am so used to dealing with people that are at weekly feedings. for you it will be like one feeding with nutes the nest feeding with water only. remember to pH your water everytime. pH before you add nutes and after. I do not think that foxfarm will effect your pH, it does not effect mine, but you never know right? you can go anywhere pretty much and get a hygrometer. or you could just watch the forecast for that day. nice picture resolution. what is it? looks like a 5.1 mega

i really fucked up bad last night, and i hope there are no consequences .

like i said i decided to go to 18/6, so last when i turned off the lights i hooked up one of those timers- but the timer i used is like one from 1970 no joke. it looked like it should work, next timer i use will be tested beforehand.

so anyways, the lights turned off at 7pm, timer should turn them back on at 1am. i woke up at 6:30am to go to work, first thing i did was go check on my babies, and guess what, the fuckin timer failed me , man i was pissed.

but i took a deep breath, resisted the urge of thrwing the useless timer through my window, and decided, or actually had no choice to go back to 24/7. maybe that was a sign that i should stay 24/7.

anyways, the plants looked fine, but will that affect anything, should i do anything to make up for that lighting mistake? so i basically had one day of 12/12 while on my 5th day of growing.

im thinking of ordering this light, found it on ebay: eBay: 400 Watt HPS grow light bulb ,NEW NO RESERVE! w (item 260077956076 end time Jan-30-07 09:15:00 PST)

id buy the hood at the local hydroponic store. does this seem like a plausible idea, it seems cheap, is that normal??

^^thats only a bulb..how much are they selling the hps ballast for?

here's a nice cheap 440w hps system that i'm useing.
also doesn't really matter all that much if they got a little bit more darkness than they needed. happens in nature all the time, dark over casts days for instance.
