First Grow w/ Aeroponics, 400w, White Rhino + Papaya

Hello everyone,

I decided I would start documenting my grow, for the sake of remembering my mistakes and possibly helping others. Here it is:

Setup:

  • 400w HPS/MH (shipping)
  • Ikea Anneboda Cabinet
  • DIY Aeroponic setup
  • White Rhino + Papaya from Nirvana

Below are pics of my setup and my babies. After 12h germinating and 36h in the rapid rooters, they are starting to pop out. The one has two leave things forming, but the one is tinged a bit purplish. I have makeshift humidomes, like flipped rubbermaids/plastic containers, the temp. is between 73-79, the humidity around 30% above. The moisture of the rapid rooters is not in excess, and I feed them water (pH: 5.8-6.3) for 1m every 5-8h because I find the RR saturate well with water. My question is, is the purplish leaf anything to worry about?

Here is an update, picture was taken today. I am wondering what I should do with those extra pots, I figure it would be too crowded if I drill two holes in the middle of the other plants. However, I don't wanna let them die :S

I would suggest getting another rubbermaid roughneck and use it for the root chamber cause it isn't clear. If light gets to the nutes and h2o than algae will start to grow. Cover that rockwool too! It will rot and kill your plants. I use 2" neoprene collars to hold my plants. No medium to hold water. And I hope you mean 1min. on and 5-8 "min" off.

Yes...Definately get rid of or cover up that transparent bin. You don't want to have to deal with those problems. Other than that enjoy your forst aero grow.

what are you using as medium? it looks like coco coir to me
I'm using rapid rooters. I had to start from seed and didn't know how to get them into the neoprene sleeves. Will it work this way?

And the rubbermaid container is covered in mylar, the only open hole is the side where it drains out into the main res. Should I cover it more? I pump it 1m whenever I get the chance, generally once every 3h now, because I'm waiting on my timer. I figure the rapid rooters will retain enough moisture to keep them going til it arrives, or is that wrong?

You germinate the seeds first, then into the collars. And there would still be light getting to the roots and nutes from the sides of that container. And light will go through mylar anyways. At least 2 mil it does.

You can just stick the seed into the collar? Hmm okay so I need to get another one? Or can I do this all in the bottom rubbermaid, without a second level?

The pics show how I added neoprene sleeves onto the pots. Do you think the system will work okay with rr instead of no medium?

The rapid rooters are going to hold excess water but you should be ok once they get a root mass. My system runs on for 1 min. and off for 5 mins. But I dont have a medium to hold water. Good on covering the rapid rooters from the light. Just try another rubbermaid on top of the other as your root chamber. You don't want your roots in the nutrients unless you keep it well aereated. If you want to just use one tote then think about bubbleponics or dwc (deep water culture) Good yields.

Yeah I have roots coming out the sides of the rapid rooters now. I have a timer coming next Thurs with a recycle timer and I plan on hookin that up with 1m on 5m off.

I can't put another rubbermaid because I'll be limited for height! The cabinet is only 70in high and two rubbermaids is 32in, plus 16in from lights and then I have like 22in leftover, not enough or yes?

There are a few different sized roughnecks that are the same width but shorter. And yes you could scrog them or lst them later but let em get going first. And after the girls get used to it in flower, the light can be a less than a foot if you can keep the canopy cool. Vented light systems are ideal.

Will it be necessary to scrog to work with limited space or will just growing them to a certain height and flowering work as well? I was thinking 1ft tall. I have a vented 400w HPS/MH coming in on Thurs :)

They will get tall fast, depending on the strain of course. Indicas are usually shorter when matured. Your cross should stay fairly short though. But you'll still have to train it during veg to fit in that space. Shorter reservoir, definately.

Sorry for not getting updates sooner! I've been working on so much stuff. Finally got the light but had to buy a tent cuz it didn't fit in my cabinet. Also had to get AC and a humidifier to maintain good temp/humidity.

I'm worried because the leaves of some of my plants have a brownish spotting thing going on, and some of the roots have brown spots. The res temp must be around 75 max, with room temp around 78. I added nutes two days ago (250ppm) and upped it to 500ppm today. I also put in some H202 at the amount of 7fl oz (6gal in res) in case some fungus is lurking. Any ideas?

Gotta get the res temp down under 68 degrees. Fungus and root rot can set in above 68 degrees. And I try to keep my room at 75 max. Is 250 ppm what your base water is? Any filteration? What kind of nutrients? If it's organic you don't want to use H2o2. It will kill all of the beneficial bacteria. Way too much H2o2 anyways. 1-2 tsp per gallon. 60 mls. max in 6 gallons. Glad you got some more room cause you will need it, lol.
