First Grow

So this is what I have going. I'm using a Jiffy 72 site peat moss germinator, then I'm going from the peat moss disk to a Jiffy 3in pot with Happy Frog Potting Soil when the roots start showing I'm breaking off the bottom of the peat moss pot and re-potting to a 2.6 Liter pot (got 'em for free) When it's gets about 1 ft tall I'll switch to one of those Ghetto fabulous fabric bags from the supermarket. I'm using Botanicare Liquid Karma and Pure Blend 3-2-4 for Nutrients. The power is an Xtrasun II reflector, Hydrafarm 1000watt SG lite switchable balast and an Ultra Sun 1000watt MH light 7,500K. The strains are God Bud, Grand Daddy Purple, Honey White, Super Haze ,Haze/Skunk #1, Raskal Chem , Diesel , Blueberry Blast, Critical + , Super Bud , Sour Bubble BX4 Mother B IX1, Northern Lights, Ace of Spades, Blue Bonic , White Widow, Kalishnikova , Pinapple Express , Exodus Cheese and finally Power Kush. Lots of strains to see what I like to grow and what is strongest. My plan is to grow these out and decide on one strain out of all of them that will work best for me to focus on. This is my first grow so Any feedback would be helpful. What do you guys think? How does my root ball Look? Good?

Dude I can't see your pics.
This sounds very promising, you got your mind in the game here. You sound like you know what your up to and I expect good things.
THe ghetto fabulous grocery bag idea is genius! I just went and looked at one I had lying around and damn... its perfect! thats gunna do a good job.
I'll offer what help I can. Looking forward to seeing this.
Check out my grow, it's my first time as well, trying to pull things together to make this work out really nicely.

Are you running both lights at the same time or is that just with 1 ballast? How big is your space? Is that soil or coco? Are you going to use those nutrients through flower as well? Your room is going be stinky! hope you get yourself a good filter haha

Ghetto fabulous fabric bags
what are those? never heard of em.
tbh i dont like the peat pots, they do take time to break down and imo that time would be better spent on the roots growing into the new soil. with happy frog i would mix it with 25% light warrior or pearlite as its pretty heavy in peat.

So you are planning on using those shopping bags as a replacement to Smart Pots? Sounds brilliant actually. I'm about to start up with a new grow myself and was looking at ordering some smart pots but I'm pretty sure I'll do this instead. So simple. :bigjoint: What do you think about doubling them up just to make sure they last the whole grow? :leaf:

Ive carried close to 40 pounds of groceries in one of those bags... they dont need any doubling up!
They are a good price, easy to get and they are a good size pot as well. I wonder how many gallons they hold. My only issue with smart pots/grocery bags is that they sit flat on the ground and you cant drain/airprune the bottoms very well. I'm actually kinda kicking myself in the but for nothing thinking of that before though, already bought some 6gallon regular pots and got them filled with plants.

Also I'm not sure what kindof shape they would take when filled?

The normal ones I use look to hold just over 5 u.s. gallons each. I was thinking of the doubling up to help with any worries of fabric deterioration. I grow for personal use only and my wife wouldn't like it much if I had more than 1 or 2 plants at a time so I will be vegging for a month and a half most likely. Add that to the estimated average flowering time of 2.5 months or a bit more for the strain I'll be growing and you end up with 4 months of being semi damp with the soil in them.

As you already have your pots sorted you may want to look into an interesting thread posted by RIU user Hobbes here: https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/303229-diy-air-pruning-pot-experiment.html

Maybe you could use some old bags as lining for your pots?

He really covered the concept of a DIY smart pot/air pruning setup quite well. I think that if he had been given the suggestion to use one of there reusable shopping bags he would have jumped at the chance to try them out. :bigjoint:

I'll try again...with the pics. Here's an update also.

  • I"m running just the 1000watt now. it's an 11x8 room with a 9+ft ceiling. I'm in soil and I will use them through flower but add a bloom booster. Also I leave them in the 3in peat moss pot until the first root shows through then I replant 'em right away. I discard the peat moss pot all together.

Here Are The Genetics: the Big Clones are B.C. God Bud and Ken Estes - Grand Daddy Purp. Got 'em 19th of Dec and veg'd 'em under a cfl for 3 weeks until I got the 1000watt on the 8th of Jan.

Seedlings planted on 1/14/2012 are
Super Haze ,Haze/Skunk #1, Dinafem Diesel , Blueberry Blast, Critical + , Super Bud , Sour Bubble BX4 Mother B IX1, Northern Lights, Ace of Spades, Kalishnikova , Pinapple Express , Exodus Cheese and finally Power Kush.Seedlings planted on 1/17/2012 - White Widow, Rascal Chem, BlueBonic, Blueberry Blast, Sour Bubble BX4 Mother B IX1, and Honey White (honey white didn't pop. planted 2 more on 1/20/2012 and one popped and is growing well.

Lots of strains to see what I like to grow and what is strongest.

Ok, So Here's an Update, tonight was a nice night at my house. Listening to Vinyl, bottle of wine and replanting. Somehow the music of a crying baby is a little sweeter with the sounds of Bob Marly, Les Claypool, and The Meters in the background and the work passes a little easier. Thank you very much Khaos516 for the Soil donation, I was getting worried about all the roots sticking out the bottom of the peat moss pots and not being able to transplant them on time. I also need to get a ventilation system more fans and hang the light right and finish bagging the room. I'm starting to realize how much water this is going to take and I'm thinking of getting a plastic 55gal barrel with a pump and hose and more Baby pools to put everything in to make this work better. Then I can just put my nutrients in the barrel and use the hose and watering wand to do most of the work. No more bending over all day with a bad back and neck. It's funny how satisfying this is and how much work it is. It's like having another more expensive kid living in my house that needs more attention than my newborn. lol I love it.

I Replanted everything and at this point it's been 14 days exactly since I planted the seeds, the Dinafem Diesel and the Homegrown Super Haze are the frontrunners. Also Sam the Skunkman's Haze/Skunk #1 are right up there. The rest are not too far behind. Strains planted on the 17th are white widow, blueberry blast, bluebonic, rascal chem, Sourbubble BX4 Mother B IX1, and honey white. One of the Snowhigh Seeds Blueberry Blast is by far the frontrunner in this list. it's as big if not bigger than some of the strains that were planted 3 days earlier. The Honey White BX2 is the slowest. Only one out of 3 seeds even popped and its' barely a sprout still but we'll see how it goes from here. I may take a pic of each strain's strongest and post their progress.

I took pics of my transplanting and made a tutorial video, but I'm not sure how I feel about posting my face. I'm not really that worried about it, but everyone else seems so overly cautious It make me think twice.

1/29/2011 After yesterday's back breaking 2 hr watering session on my knees with a bad back I decided I need to get 'em off the ground or I probably won't be able to hang anymore.

1/31/2012 3 weeks and 3 days in and the Dinafem Diesel, Super Haze and the Haze/Skunk #1 are the front runners. One of the Ace of Spades TGA subcool has the thickest stem by far.
