First LED Attempt

Ok guys - any introduction is in order first. Been a grower but with CFL/Floro and Metal Halide (Veg) and strict HPS (Flower)

Long time lurker and learner here, but now I'm wanting to start trying a perpetual grow with LEDs, specifically a DIY COB setup.

So, I run 9 plants at a time, in a 3' x 3' setup, in Perlite and coco mix in 5 gallon buckets.

So, here is what I have come up with.

There will be 9 CREE CXB3590 COBs - 1 over the center of each plant (6500k for veg, 2700k for flower), run in series. 2 drivers - 1 MeanWell HLG-480H-C2100 to run the first 6 COBs, 1 MeanWell HLG 240H-C2100 to run the other 3 COBs. Each COB will be attached to a 140mm Passive Pin Heatsink.

The picture is for seedling and veg stage. It will be the same setup for flowing stage except the COBs will be 2700k in the flowing room.

Expert critique from @Growmau5 would be associated, lol....

Thanks in advance,

Gonna be a nice set up buddy. Get ready to watch them ladies sprout and bush out without stretching at all. I'm talking stacking and throwing 9 point leaves at 5" tall. Welcome to Coblife

I'd be careful with that much light it will stress the plants out and might cause them to have seeds I did that once when I put 2400w in a 4 x 8 tent and all you need is 50w per sqft

I'm only coming up with about 680 watts, not 1000.

9 36v COBs x 2.1ma = 680.4

3' x 3' = 9 sq.ft

680/9 = ~75w/sq.ft.

Am I miscalculating or doing something wrong?

Also, forgot to mention in the original post, all plants will be the recipient of Low Stress Training as well.

Your math is right. 680w, comes out to around 330 PAR watts which is similar to the output of a 1000w HPS SE. If you're attempting to replace a 1000w then it makes sense. If you're trying to replace a 600w HPS and bumping the wattage a little bit, it will end up being a whole lot more light than you're expecting. PPFD in a 3x3 will be around 1800.

If you were using C1400B drivers you would get 50wpsf which would be excellent. Lower amps and watts means lower heat and higher umoles/w.

I did a 3x3 with 8 cxb3590 36v and 2 HLG-185H-C1400B drivers for 400w which was about 45wpsf. was real nice, but i went to a 2x4 tent and different setup altogether.

So, if I'm correct, both of the drivers I mentioned in the original both have an on board dimmer that I'd be able to lower the amps out to 1.4 if I see any burnage on the plants.

This 9 x 36w x 1.4a = 453w / 9 = 50 w/sq.ft. if someone could help me with the ppfd for this, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you,
