First Mushroom Grow!

I officially have growth in 6-7 of my jars!!!! It is very hard to make out due to the addition of vermiculite but there is for sure something going on. From as well as I can tell things are a nice pure white! I marked the first jars to show growth as those will probably be the ones I do a grain transfer from later on. I am excited to watch these babies colonize. I will get pictures in the next day or two when growth is a bit more substantial/noticeable. :-)

wooot...hell yeah man congrats!!

dont shake right away...i made that mistake and it seemed to hinder my growth, wait a day or so untill you have at least 5-6 visible kernels with mycelium...then shake once and you should be good. i shok firsst couple signs of life i seen and it seemed to slow my growth down..

My spores finally arrived and I am in the process of sterilizing my jars with my substrate. After a little more research I changed things up and decided to use white kernel popcorn to colonize my spores on rather than the verm/brown rice mixture. I will left my jars sit overnight to cool and will be constructing my "glove box" tomorrow to incubate my jars. I ended up with one syringe of B+ and two syringes of PES, figure with the 24 jars of substrate I will have sterilized it will only take one of them for this round going on a .5cc/jar basis. Hopefully all will go well inoculating my jars tomorrow, I plan to spray the HELL out of everything including the glove box with 99% alcohol prior to inoculating my jars. Wish me luck! :-)
nvm i answered my own question

head on over to mycotopia, great forum, ive been a member there longer than i can remember lol. theres a cool dvd that explains a few different methods also called Lets Grow Mushrooms. add some Gypsum to your substrate like someone else said and youll be amazed. growing mushrooms is really easy if you take your time and research every step and know why your doing things, then you can make changes to suit your style or strain. good luck! were a dieing breed

i would recomend not using spores101 either. i had a 500 dollar order come as only half, never able to contact anyone to complain. when i tracked them down in Ann Arbor where it said it shipped from, it was a empty office building. not cool. but that was 1 out of 50 orders that got screwed so id take that with a grain of salt, im just really bitter towards them still lol. in that dvd i mentioned it shows how to take cultured samples and preserve them indefinitely, im proud to have a mushroom culture only mini-fridge in my basement. i havent grown any in a few years but i like to know i can anytime i want, and from any strain that i have successfully saved. ordering spores was always nerve racking to me

The spores I used for this run are from micro-supply.com, seems everything is going as it should so I have nothing bad to say about them.

i have already made a acct over at topia and got flammed for saying something about people wanting to buy them already and i havent even grown them. i stated that i didnt want to sell them but may trade them if they want to pick me up some supplies for my hobby..

not too happy about that....dont really understand why they get all butt hurt over selling them but growing them is ok???both are equally illigal lol

all but the Z strains grew fine for me, my issue is with their customer service, or the fact that there isnt any. i used them for a long time until they were all about pushing grow kits. id rather spore places only do spores, but thats a hard find now a days.

yea there pretty finicky about stuff like that, most wont even admit to growing mushies themselves, kinda how most of these RIU type forums for weed use to be. im sure there tired of the newbie question of how much money off a pound can i make type shit so when they seen you mention money, its kinda like a bull seeing a red flag. or maybe its because you told others you were growing? thats kind of a hot button issue for most too. the less others know about your grow the safer we all are kinda thing. internet personalities are a weird thing tho, just gotta have thick skin. what kinds are you guys growing?

Things are moving along very nice! I am pleased to say that so far out of 24 pint jars I have growth in 16 of them, 10 of which are the B+(more potent syringe?) the other 6 are the Hawaiian. I have been marking my jars with a number for each day I see growth, and shook the first few jars for the first time today(it REALLY wants to stick together in there!). Will give the rest of the jars the remainder of the week to do something otherwise they will just get dumped(somewhere FAR away!!!!)this coming weekend. I plan to use the first jars that showed growth to do a G2G transfer(In hopes that the first to grow are the better genetics?) later on and continue on without the need for syringes, I will also be taking spore prints to save for future use. Been trying to get pictures but the vermiculite/corn mixture is making it rather difficult.....:( Hopefully once things move along a bit more it will be easier to see. Maybe with any luck I will start casing a couple jars this weekend. I plan to use a coco coir/vermiculite mixture to case with figure about a 70/30 mixture, just haven't decided on what size pans I am going to use or how many jars I will put in each one. Any suggestions?

im using lasagna throw away pans, they came 2 per pack with a lid and they are fairly deep...$2.50 for a 2 pack...not too shabby. i think i may run into issues with them being not deep enough.

eventually i would like to buy a bunch of small totes for casing/fruiting....

you can also use the throw away pans without the lid just need to make a FC big enough to fit your pans...or a couple pans...with 16 1/2 pint jars you will probabally need a few FC's

also i have read that mycelium will eat through the aluminum

if you go with pans to case in -----> then pans with cased sub into a FC (tote) you can hit up the dollar store, they have lots of plastic non transparent containers there for a buck. then just toss em in a trash bag to finish colonizing the casing and toss in FC tote to fruit..

that will also be good because you can put wet perilite on the bottom of the FC to help maintain that high humidity your looking for.

One of the reasons many have a hard time finding mushrooms is that the mushroom commands many to refrain from selling them. Lots of people are only allowed, at best to barter their crops. they do that for a very important reason - they don't want to visit hell.

When we go into the domain of the mushroom that mushroom has all the power. If we were told not to sell them then we may violate that command but we are best never ever taking a dose of them again. Lots of people don't want to bar the door to that sort of power, and so they don't talk about selling them.

But that is just a guess.

Do yourselves a favor. Drill one or two small holes in the bottom of your totes. It is invariable that you will encounter a high temp day, mycelium will
exude a clear liquid in temperatures above 80 something. This will not harm your crop (much) but it will tend to invite contamination and CAN drown portions of your grow. A tiny hole or two will let that fluid drain out so you don't have to pour it out. And no, putting some sort of absorbent at the bottom is still asking for trouble.

If using disposable pans to case with then putting those pans in your tote lined with vermiculite (for humidity?), would you not want to put holes in both the pans and tote or are you saying to ditch the vermiculite in the bottom of the tote and rely on your casings to produce the necessary humidity? Thanks for dropping in from time to time to check on things and throw out some advice. :)
