First Outdoor Grow (BC, Canada) - Looking for strain suggestions

Hi everyone, thanks for having me in the forum!

Intro
Totally new to growing weed, but I have somewhat of a green thumb and have learned to grow everything from tomatoes to mushrooms with success — hoping to do the same here! I live in the South East Kootenays in British Columbia, Canada. Very sunny, can be windy, pretty decent place to be no matter what you like to grow (be it Cannabis or not) — I enjoy growing everything.

Question
I'm looking to do my first outdoor grow and have been having a hard time finding the perfect seeds.
Here's my wish list, any strain suggestions?

- Location: Southern Interior BC (Good sun, dry climate)
- Height restriction: ~4ft max
- Earlier finish Late Aug-Mid September
- Yield doesn't have to be bonkers
- Indica, Sativa, Hybrid (Flexible here)
- Feminized Seeds

If you can grow tomatoes, you can grow weed. Very similar cultivation and environmental requirements. You can even use the same fertiliser... :)

I can't recommend strains as I'm further north than you and am just starting a greenhouse grow. However I think there are BC specific strains that have been developed over the years for the particular climate, as historically it was a very active area for growers going back to the 1960s. Maybe try your local seed banks for advice, e.g. BC Seeds?

For an early finish you may want to consider a semi-autoflower strain, or even try autoflowers.

Thanks for reply! Yeah I've come across a few vendors with strains that are suited specifically for BC and Northern prairies like Great White North, Manitoba Poison, Early Sativa, etc. But the vendor doesn't offer auto's or feminized. Since it's my first grow I just want to get aquatinted and not be bogged down with eliminating males etc.

I've never heard of semi-autos! Why are they semi? Breeders just give up getting that ruderalis dialed-in?

There are tons of BC-based seed vendors like cropkingseeds.com Have yet to reach out to seed banks (vendor vs seed bank? hmmm)

Purple Haze is top of my list as well as Gorilla Glue and Strawberry Cough (But Strawberry Cough might get too tall...can maybe work in some dill and sunflowers for cover from attracting unwanted passers by!)

I was looking for some fast finishers, to avoid the mold issues i had last season, and came across Tropicanna poison f1 by sweet seeds.
Its a photoperiod plant with enough auto genetics to finish fast. Supposedly a aug/september finish

Semi-autos are photos with a cross with an autoflower in the mix of genetics, so they finish earlier than strains without those traits.

Yeah running regs is slightly more of a challenge, I haven't attempted it yet myself. I suppose most strains will grow outdoors, fems and autos.

The main issues at your latitude will be mould and inconsistent sunshine/temps. There are strains bred for your specific locale, but also I'm aware of Dutch outdoor strains such as Frisian Dew for example that have good mould resistance and tolerate lower temperatures. Also there's a whole bunch of Scandinavian bred strains that would work, however the ones I've seen are all regs. There are also UK bred strains that are supposed to work well in a damper, cooler climate. As for autos, I have heard good things about Auto Mazar being mould resistant, also Northern Lights (photo or auto) is supposed to be easy to grow, a good strain for resisting mould and tolerates cooler temps. I have grown Northern Light Auto on the windowsill and it did well.

Try to have a back up plan, like shelter.
A rain cover or the ability to bring them inside to finish flowering.
Come September or October rain and humidity will rot everything.
I hate to see you get to flower, just to toss it.

Id say maybe worth looking into real gorilla seeds (bred by panik) for semi autos like dfg greengold whiteyfreeze etc or check out kwik seeds for friesland indica theres also hybrids from hell stuff that works up to lat 61 so theres plenty to choose from even in shit climates

You should look into Lucky13 Seeds, they are also local to you.. That would be where I would be going.. My buddies and I are growing their gear this year and so far it's fantastic.

Around here my only worry is inconsistent sunshine/temps than humidity. I'm from the coast and it's so freaking dry our here. While it can be very sunny most summers, you can get still get some weird weather. Last year we had the heat dome, but this year I haven't even planted my peppers and tomatoes yet (May 17th!).

Considering your height restrictions (4' max), that would be another reason to try autos. You can keep photos in pots to constrain their overall size, but then you're adding the pot height to the total height of the plant. There are some ways to train the plant to keep it shorter, but photos outdoors will want to get big. One way to keep a photo smaller is get a late start, that will cut the veg time. Photo or Auto, I would suggest topping the plant to keep it from sending up one tall center cola.

As far as auto strains I'd recommend, first, I recommend North Atlantic Seed Company as a solid reliable source. Last summer a few that did well for me were Twenty/20 - Triks, Ethos - Pluto's Cut, and Fast Buds - Gorrilla Cookies. RobBuds Purple Scoop was awesome, but I'm not sure where you can get that one. Previous year was all Mephisto for me, and Cosmic Queen, Double Grape, and Forgotten Cookies all did really well. (the person I grow for prefers sativa leaning hybrids, so that's what most of these are)

If you plant in the ground in well tended beds, the plants can get significantly bigger. The ones I grew in pots last year were all over the map, had an odd year, looking through my notes I only got a few ounces per plant. Had all of my biggest ones get mold though, so it was the smaller ones that survived.

A lot of people still hate autos, but it's all I grow at this point, and they have come a long way. I grow for a stoner who's been smoking for decades, and she loves them, can't tell the difference between high quality autos and high quality photos.

Yeah. I'm guessing all these mould complaints are coming from the UK and other wet climates.
