Hi rollitup community, how's it growin? My names Tyler, I'm a newbie grower, and this is my first post on any of the cannabis related forums. I found that I usually came across the most knowledgeable people and best advice on this forum so here I am! I started growing about 3 and a half months ago when I was gifted some seeds and figured why not? It has quickly turned into something I love doing and I plan on become a very active member in the community.

Onto the thread topic. I'm currently growing in a 2x2x4 tent, 4 inch exhaust w/carbon filter, and a 300w galaxy hydro led. 2 girls out of the original 4, switched to 12/12 a week ago. I may finish off this grow with the galaxy just to see how it comes out, but either way I needed to ask this. I feel like my lighting is insufficient for many reasons (lack of power, not enough blue spectrum) so I'm in the market for a new light setup. ive done weeks of forum surfing and YouTube videos trying to gather as much info as I could before I brought this to the forum. I apologize in advance if these have already been discussed.

1. 2 300w viparspectras reflectors daisy chained. I like the vipars in comparison to the galaxy for their added blue lighting, plus I feel 2 300s would cover the 2x2 very well! I was looking for someone with a similar set-up but I couldn't find anything.

2. 1 viparspectra 600w reflector. I like this idea cause in the future if I decide to go with a 2x4 I can just add another. Plus the 600w comes with the veg and bloom switch, which the 300s don't, but I feel I could live without it.

3. 1 black diamond perfect sun mini. Now I like several things about the mini. Low power draw, green light so plants show natural color, and it's very powerful for its size. The main reasons I haven't pulled the trigger on this one yet is cause I spoke to Neil and he suggested my tent was to small for even the mini and that I would probably light stress my girls. Also it's 70 bucks more the 600w, and 90 more than the 2 300s.

Also, heat is not an issue. My tent stays at about 71-72 with the light on, and 69 with it off, and that's with my fam turned down as low as it can go with the controller, so I can move much more air if needed.

I appreciate any and all advice/suggestions. I will start a journal for my next grow with whichever route I choose to go.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to RIU Tyler.

The vipars are better than galaxy but not much better. The thing is to try and stay away from blurple LEDs and stay away from anything which lists wattage in the title that isn't the actual wattage. Its common for them to call something a 300w LED because its made from 100x 3w diodes, that doesn't make it a 300w LED. So your starting point is they are already lying about what they are selling you. Real LED guys are using COBs or Quantum boards and they perform very well.

If you want to do as well as possible with an LED in that space then I would suggest one of these.

https://horticulturelightinggroup.com/products/135w-led-board-kit These guys advertise on here so you can speak to them direct @robincnn or @Stephenj37826

It is 135w which is actually about the power real consumption of what you already have, the difference is you get much more light out of this for that wattage, its more efficient. It also uses a white light which has a better colour spectrum than mixing red and blue and other diodes (blurple)
It will grow far better weed and yield better than a cheap shit Chinese LED. Plus its pretty damn good price wise and about the best you can get with LEDs these days.

Take a trip to the LED section and have a look at the threads in there...

Good luck and happy growing.

You can convert them to cobs, it's very easy and relatively inexpensive. I turned my viparspectra par600 into a cob unit. You'd need to open them up and see what the outputs on the drivers are. I've built a bunch of cobs since then, if yr interested I'll walk u through it

Thanks for the quick response guys. I've done a bit of research on Cobs and I'm not opossed to them. I was looking at the 3 and 4 Cob Mau5 kits for a while. I'm pretty handy as far as soldering, assembly, etc.

@coreywebster thanks the info and link. I like the kit so I put my email on the mail list since they are currently sold out of the unit. I was expecting the blurple Chinese led response, I guess I just needed to hear it from the horses mouth. Haha

@Royalroacho i like the idea of converting, sounds like it could be a fun project. The GH 300 I have had 3 60-90v drivers. Would converting give me the same result as say one of mau5 kits?

Does anyone have any experience with the perfect sun mini. For some reason I'm still turned onto this light, but the lack of reviews scares me. Literally the only info I can find is the info (vids, journals) by Neil himself.

No worries.

I had to look that perfect sun light up. It says something that there's not many grows to see with it. But give the guy credit he says a lot of the right things and not many wrong ones. You can do better for that money with DIY though.

As for converting your own light, that's a great idea since your not put off by DIY, you would have to see what amps the drivers are in there. There's much more option now than just CXB chips too. Citizen and vero are top notch and cheaper than cree.
If you like the idea of DIY with the small space you have and that sort of price tag as on the perfect sun the world is your oyster!!:bigjoint:

Yeah, they'll be the same if running them at the same power. Don't bother with the perfect sun, the cobs are superior. I've had fantastic results with them, and get the same yield going from 600w hps with 320w, maybe a little more. I'm still in my first year growing, the lighting is ahead of my technique. the more experienced growers ive seen using tgem get better yields than hid's. My buddy's an older guy that's been growing for 20+ years, he laughed at me for using led, but he's convinced and pretty excited after he saw my results.
What's the output amperage on the drivers?

These were grown under 320 watts citizen 1818's, they're mephistos autoflower sour Stomper. I got about 5 oz from 2 plants. I did some pretty bad damage overwatering them, yield could have been better, but the quality was outstanding. The bud density under the cobs is the best I've seen

Hey can I ask how many cobs u were able to put on 1 of those viparspectras? If my math is right they should accommodate 5 50w cobs?

@Royalroacho the drivers are 500ma each. This is the area were I would need your help. I'm a handyman, but electrical "knowledge" has never been my strong point, I get lost in all the watts, volts, amps, etc.

@coreywebster yeah I don't really want to break that 250ish perfect sun budget, but if I have to I will. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for, but I also have to mind my wallet too! Been checking out those HLG lights you sent in the link. I'm liking those a lot! I can see one of those 135s in my tent, or maybe even 2 90s!

Needless to say, after what you guys have said I think the DIY bug has bit me pretty hard.
