Hi I'm new to this hole growing thing so i started up 5 plants about 3 1/2 weeks ago there doing great not growing real fast but there growing. I was talking to my brother and he said that my 3 of my plants are males. I told him that there is no way to tell yet. so he says that if there is the 5 parts on the leaves on the on the 3rd set up on the plant its female, and if there is 3 parts on the leaves on the 3rd set up that it is male. i thought that the only way to tell male or female is the 2 white hairs?? does he know what he is talking about? he has grow weed for as long as i could remember but i don't know if he actually knows what he is saying

when they are 8-10 inchs high you can tell, the males have balls the females do'nt

hey no offense eskimo, but it really has absolutely nothing to do with how tall they are, its just how far along in there growth cycle they are. usually at around th 4th week of veg they start showing there pre-flowers which show the sex and also let you know they are ready to flower

Your brother's wrong, although there are trends in vegetative growth that may indicate whether a plant is male or female. I want to emphasize that these are only trends, not rules. Generally, the taller plants with seemingly "sporadic" foliage growth in a garden will become males. This is so that when the pollen sacs develop they can drop more easily into the female plants that are generally below them. Plants that are smaller and have more lateral growth tend to be female. Plants that also undergo large amounts of stress tend to be male or hermaphrodite.

Again I want to emphasize that these are only trends and the only way to determine sex for sure is when you can visually see the male or female organs. Just because one of your plants is tall does not mean it will be a male and vice versa.

He doesn't know what he's talking about I'm afraid - you cannot tell sex from the numbers of fingers on the leaves - only from pre-flowers.

All cannabis plants grow multi-fingered leaves, both male and female. They start out at 1 fingered leaf, next set up is 3, next set up is 5, next set up is 7, next set up is 9, next set up is 11. Some Sativa varieties even produce 13 fingered leaves.
