A few of random tips that I learned the hard way.
1. Make sure your plants are big enough when u plant them-- the smaller they are, the more chance they won't make it from the elements, about a foot tall is good.
2. Make sure your plot gets plenty of sun-- go several times thruout the day (and thruout the season) to check the sun patterns. The more sun the better.
3. Don't plant too early-- wait 'til (at least) the last average frost date for your area. If the ground is cold they won't grow hardly anyway, and u take the chance of early flowering, and they're exposed to the elements longer, and if there's not much natural vegetation yet, your plants will be very obvious early munchies for the animals.
4. Protect your plants from the critters-- I lost 9 plants (so far) to deer this season. 5 had been flourishing for 3.5 weeks. It was heart breaking. I'm picking up some chicken wire today.
5. Start your plants inside in early spring (or earlier) and grow twice as many as u think u want-- u probably will lose some.
6. Use clones if u can, so u don't have to do all that work 4 males.
Hope this helps and good luck!
