First time grow questions

First off, hi everyone! :) Secondly, I've looked for a simple answer to these but I really cant find em on here, and my black belt in google fu has failed me.

Alright, Once I'm done with this quater at school, I plan to do a small closet grow. Nothing huge, 4-5 autoflowers max. I have ventilation planned out, along with odor neutralizer. (More for peace of mind than anything.) I am also planning on using 5 CFL bulbs for light (4 5000k & 1 2700k) hanging from a horizontally hung surge protector. Is this a bad idea? I'll be coating the inside with mylar and using reflective tape to hold it up and cover any cracks. I'll be using 3gal grow bags and planting directly into the grow bag with no transfer planned. (Bad idea?) Now, on to where I think I have my problem. I say think because for all I know I could just be completely wrong about everything and about to get schooled. Anyways, soil. Ugh. Such a pain in the ass. Ive yet to find one product that says "Dump this shit in a bucket, toss a seed in, and make sure she doesnt dry up to dust." I have done a bit of reading on soil and found that many people have varied tastes on it. Some like Fox Farm, others Black Gold, etc etc.

So, question numero uno, is there a prepackaged soil that is a good starting point for me? Ive seen Promix tossed around a few times, but the way some people word their answers leaves confusion. Annnd then on to the part where I go 'derp' as it is. Nutes. I know absolutely nothing about them, and I usually know something about everything. I know they can burn your plants if mis used :( but I dont know what to add, how to add it, how much to add, or when?

Anything you have to add would be insanely helpful. I have a while before I want to start this, and I want to know all I can by then and not fuck up as much.

Thanks a million guys!

I can't help at all with soil grows, never had any luck with it. But for CFL and vegging that will get you started. You may need more lights depending on the size of the plant. You want to make sure you get light all around the plant. For flowering you'll need to change all your lights to 2700k.

i use fox farms and happy frog for soils and they are great. thier nutes are good too but you have to realize that soil growing is a lot of work and when you grow in soil you will have to face that there will be times you will have to "flush" your grow medium. and i agree with silicone you will need more light power for flower. if you are going to use cfl's at least get T5's they can really crank out more lumens than T8 or T12's

Thanks guys. :) More light? How many bulbs per plant would you say? What kind of nutes do you use, how much, when and where do you add them?

Checking this, looking for a new bong online, writing a case study on an essay AND playing solitaire.

Skills.

as far as light here is the math to follow... each light bulb you buy tells you how many lumens it produces. add up the square footage of your grow space and you want to get at least 3500 lumens per square foot imo to even get a ok plant, 5000 lumens per square foot for good plants and 10,000 lumens per sq foot for great plants.

i use fox farms nutes, use 1/4 strength at the start then half, then full. i feed/water/feed. i'm in soil and my plants go about 3 days before they need a drink in 4 gallon buckets of fox farms ocean forest. so it works out to a feeding per week almost. remember to water thoughrouly then allow the medium to dry. roots need a good balance of air and water but don't let them get too dry where the leaves droop bro...

you can grow start to finish with the main 3, grow big, big bloom, and tiger bloom. i use the entire liquid line for fox farms including the bush doctor products and the soluables are awesome for the 1-2 punch in the end but always remember.....start low then increase feeding doses as they grow and get bigger

I'd go with hid. I would use roots organic 707 great soil the problem is everyone is going to sat get what they use so you'll have to just break down and choose.. fox farm nutes would be Best bet tho I've used general organics go box and had great results and you can get it on amazon for cheap eveything you need but seeds. I would check out seaofseeds.com or .org one of them lol for your seeds they give good freebies good priced use rollitup in the promo box and get 11% discount and there stealth as you get . Heres a good website that has good prices on shit too everythings a little cheaper on amazon but the roots organic but its ok site . Eastwesthydro.com. hope this helps oh. and if your going with autos check out dinafems critical jack auto or nirvana short ryder. Good luck and happy growing.

I own a 400 watt switchable ballast mh/hps IT's Apollo works great I got it of Amazon for 135.00

Ya, I'm a first timer too. I'm currently growing a few plants and wanted to get some CFLs. I'm currently at the flowering stage for 2 plants but the thirdis still growing. So t5 would be the best CFL to get? And second I had to trim a 2 leaves off the top of my third plant (the one that is still growing) its about a foot tall now but somehow two leaves kinda got ripped so I cut them off. Should I cut the stem too or just leave the stems.

Oh yea, I wanted to plant 5 different Dinafem autos. Amnesia Original Automatic, White Cheese Automatic, White Widow Automatic, Roadrunner Automatic - FeminizedRoadrunner Automatic and Critical Jack Automatic.

I've seen good things about these. Including reviews of 3+ zips per plant.

Patriot, if your just starting out (IMHO) sticking with CFLs is a great way to learn and keep costs down. When you have one or a few grows under your belt and want to continue then you have more knowledge on what kind of HID system to get.

Don't count chickens before eggs are even in the nests. Using CFL there is no way for a new grower to get even close to that yield.
