I planning on growing the first time this summer outdoors near a pond. there is a pond and then around 10 aches of woods surrounding it and i plan to grow it somewhere in the woods that is open to sunlight. Any suggestions for what to grow i dont want a tall plant but more of a smaller one. Also i know there are deer in the area is there a threat they may eat the plant. Last how many times a day should i water it.

I grew up in CT and here is how i did it-

all your plants should be knee high by july and most of the time i sexed them before putting them out. I grew them indoors from Feb in a closet with CFL or FL tubes

i used a pricker bush so no one saw them and help keep animals and people out just hollow out the center and grow in a dome of safety.

water only when it hasn't rained in a few days I give it nutes every 10 days on a day it hasn't rained.

worst thing to do is go there every day i go about every 10-15 days and when its closer to picking i wait as long as i can.

pick a spot that has a lot of sun and to keep them small and bushy just pick the tops off and they will bush out

I would pick the spot soon and start to dig holes and cut prickers now and put good soil in or add things to the soil that gives it time to leach out i put chicken, cow and stear shit in a big whole it worked great for me when i planted in it in the spring. also if some one finds a whole now there like what ever but if you wait its hard to hide what your doing. this kind of gives you a head start.

test the water in the stream some have high lime and iron and i would check the PH just to be safe. if there are fish in the stream you should be ok look under rocks and such i would also get the moss and put it on the bottom of your plant helps with drought time.

good luck here are a few i did in 2003 in ct

I'm in MA. Grew Early Misty and Top44 (from Nirvana) last summer. Early Misty was awful (didn't flower until like October... so much for 'early'), and Top44 was pretty good I guess. To be honest, I wouldn't use either of those strains again, I don't think. Maybe the Top44, but I'd look around for something better first. Try to find a strain that stays low, is good for outdoors, flowers very quickly (6-9 weeks), and is hardy (pest/mold/cold resistant, if possible).

I visited plants only about once a week to check on them, fertilize, etc. Biggest problem while growing in MA: the MOLD got me at the end, real bad. Be VERY careful in September, because that mold is nearly impossible to get rid of once it starts.

Watering SHOULD NOT BE MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY!! I cannot stress that enough! They simply don't need that much water, and you WILL get caught if you visit your spot every day. Water should be every 3 or 4 days maybe...usually rain will take care of it for you. If there's a drought, they may need your help. They need nutrients about once a week. Nature will not take care of that for you.

Oh and deer can be a problem, but wasn't for me. I had LOTS of deer in the area (I saw them within 1000 feet of my spot on several occasions) but never had any problem with them. I often had leaves that were a little chewed up by insects, but nothing too bad, and definitely not by larger animals. Again, the worst thing was definitely the mold...

Good luck man.
