First time, is it really necessary to buy seeds?

I've had other hobbies, mainly with mushrooms, and had my first batch completely ruined because I didn't know what I was doing. I'm assuming the same will happen with my first grow. So my question is simple, what are the chances I ruin my first grow? I'm a smart guy, but still a complete noob without much prior gardening experience. I don't want to buy seeds only to sacrifice them as a learning experience. I'd rather use stash seeds for that while I learn. I'm also doing this solely for personal consumption so potency and yield are not very important to me while I learn.

I wasn't able to find a similar question posted here before but I know one must exist. If it does, just let me know the link and delete this post. I did search for it!

Cheers

if u got them use your bagseeds then if u do fuck your grow up it wont hurt so much.if u read, watch vids on youtube then the chances r u will just make mistakes that can be resolved with the help available on here.but there is a chance u might ruin your first grow some ppl do.more than likely u will finish your first grow but the learning curve is second to none.good luck

It's a good idea...just don't be discouraged if you get some scraggly little charlie brown pot plant..because it might just be crap bagseed genetics. But it is better to learn with cheap seeds than ones you have to pay a whole lot for...i did one grow of bag seed, and then ordered real seeds...first seed I bought was a mostly sativa that was super finicky...we spent 2 years getting to know one another, and then I ordered a few more seeds...and got a bunch free, and then I was addicted... Because they really are different in the ways that strains grow. Now I have some seeds that I consider just generic Indicas...they are all supposed to be different strains, but they are really very very similar. Anyway...yes it is a good idea to start with seeds you have as opposed to ones you spent money on.

there is always an arguement here. bag seed can be great or it can be nothing but trouble. I personally never paid for a seed in the 15 years Ive been playing the game. you just gotta find a good one and milk that hoe for all it's worth(take clones flower plants save the best clone as a mother) if your talkin growing 1 plant you may be vey dissapointed they are not all winners.

find the winners and clone clone clone your way to greatness. it can be done just not everyone has the time or patience to have to search for a flava so they buy a specific breed

Glad to hear I'm thinking on the right track. I do understand the possibility of having some bum plants, and I'm okay with that. Love the Charlie Brown plant reference lol.

Thanks for the responses! I'll be posting a journal of my progress once I start, really looking forward to it!

Cheers

Good luck on your first grow. My advice is don't overthink it. I find most new growers mess up cause they listen to everyones advice and try to do to much to there plants.
It's easy really. Water them, give them good light, less is more with fertilization, and air flow.

There's only one way to learn and that is to do it and don't start thinking you'll f... up. The odds are in your favor if you pay attention to your plant and treat it right, after all it's just a weed and they can take a lot of punishment....good luck my friend.

You're already asking the right kind of questions so I'm sure you will find success eventually. It might not be the first time, it took me 3 grows to get my first success. But once you get it the first time, it's a process that's easy to replicate.

If you don't care about results/yield etc, then I would also recommend just going with what you have. It will at least let you get a feel for the growing process.

However, keep in mind because the seeds are suspect that doing the right thing might still lead to mediocre results and so the information you gather as you grow and learn will be needed to taken with a grain of salt.

I'm a noob too and trust me you don't want to be bothered with those bag seeds. I posted the same thing last week and the response was to ditch them. I tried growing with them they opened during germination but never made it above soil. The ones I purchased are about 1.5 inches above soil and were planted 2 days after the bag seeds.

I thought that this wasn't always true. Crap weed doesn't mean crap seeds? I was told that you could get some real shitty weed with some seeds in it but then grow some really bomby pot because it just turns out the grower didn't know what he/she was doing but the plant actually contains good genetics.

i guess its all just a matter of opinion.. this is my first grow and i chose to just use seeds that i have accumulated over time. i have 10 bagseeds going right now. just over four weeks into flowering and i cant complain :)

plus when you buy seeds, most places give you ten or twenty free seeds in addition to the good purchased strain. you can start with the unknown free seeds then move on when you see how easy it is.

Wow @mary.jane71, nice work! I've already decided to grow my bag seeds as a start, would be damn nice to get something like that but not worried if I don't. Thanks for the info everyone!

One of your first chancy steps will be when you have paid the price they want for good seeds. So your idea is a good one. I paid a lot of money six years ago for femenized seeds. I remember thinking, "I don't want to mess this part up and not get all 12 seeds to pop. I ended up getting 9 of them to pop and one was a dam male!

Patience is helpful too... You will do fine more than likely if you do as above noted READ A LOT, but don't over-react to each little curl a leaf takes.

every post here is true...I've seen people have great girls come from bagseed, but i've seen other people have better girls from breeders.....First time out, go bagseed, learn the ropes, go from there......it is a weed remember, and going apeshit with every little problem does nothing to enhance your experience.....quite honestly. your environment has soooo much to do with your final product. If you have a shitty environment, not even the best fem breeder seeds are going to turn out good....then again, with a GREAT environment, even bagseed can be DANK.....you reap what you sow and care for.
