Fish bone meal substitute

Hey guys,

I only can find fish meal, with a salmonella killer agent. I wonder if it will kill all others micro organisms too. What could I use to substitute it for?

Crab meal brings chitin or chitinase to the table as well iirc. I'm a fan of the dash of this / dash of that approach for variety so I can try to get the benefits from having multiple sources of the macro/micro inputs.

I was also under the impression that fish bone meal was also different/beneficial in the very nature of its composition, like something to do with amino acid chains or something like that. But I remember someone citing additional benefits beyond just the core NPK it's used for. I also think I remember someone saying it broke down faster and became plant-available sooner.

If you are pre mixing and cooking your soil (letting it compost and cool off in a tarp for 50 to 70 days l) fresh chicken manure is tottaly fine. It just need time to do its thing withvthe other amendments. I also use bio char and hardwood ashes in my soil that helps level out the ph of my soil alot faster. I also use fish bone meal in my super mix, but chicken manure is an invaluable amendment I use on a garden space over 6000 square feet. The stuff is gold for organic growing. Make sure it is used sparingly and that it has been composted of you are using as a top dressing. Pz

I have access to a ton of fresh chicken manure. How long and also how should I compost it? It's mixed with straw from the bedding if that matters. Thanks.

Throw it in a pile out in the yard. Let it get rained on and mix In some dirt turn the pile if you want. Use your instincts, this is way easier if you let our natural Intuition take over.

It will have a much milder smell when it’s done. Mixed in with the straw, a shovel full of good dirt from the woods and some dry leaves it should take about 6 weeks to be usable ime .

Great, thanks for the replies. I had just heard from multiple people about how hot it was when it's fresh when I was growing mater's. I sure didn't want to burn my meds. I wake up to roosters daily so it's plenty fresh. The neighbors have chickens, turkeys and ducks so it's pick of the litter so to speak. Thanks again, once it warms up enough to want to be outside I'll try to setup an area to work it.
