fishing bait box surprise. Info/advice needed.

Hi everyone.

September last year I picked up some fishing equipment from an auction. The auction house only posted one picture with a description about the rods. Also in the description it read 'fishing paraphernalia and bait boxes.'

One of the 'bait boxes' has lots of packets of cannabis seeds. In the past I have used hemp seeds as bait, but these are individual branded packets all sealed. I've spent a bit of time reading up on the legality of possessing them, and now I know I wont be in trouble I was hoping to get some info on what I've got and if they are actually worth anything.

I will add photos and write a list of what I have, today and tomorrow.

'Sup Fisherman Jim. Welcome. I'll be the first to say it. That's a helluva unexpected free haul.
I wonder if the original owner kept them there for stealth purposes and not 'bait.
Their "worth" depends on who wants them. Some of them could be considered prized packs. Some oldie but goodies you have there.

Boy if (all blues) by ggg was in that bounty.....

Son of a bitch! Last time I went fishing up here I bottomed out the car and ripped off the exhaust. Had to take my tackle and box out of the trunk to get to my jack and put them beside the car. My 9' noodle rod and a box full of the tackle got left on the side of the road when I drove away. Didn't notice until I got home and couldn't drive that dragging pipe all the way back to look for it. There was tackle in that box that I inherited from my grandfather who got me hooked on fishing when I was 3. At least I didn't lose his old fly rod which is one of the few prized possessions I will be proud to leave to my son.

Somebody found a nice deal on the side of that gravel road and they can't be very nice people as my name and number is written in the lid of the tackle box. An old address and phone number from BC many years ago but I still have a land-line under my name so it wouldn't take much to get my new number. I posted an ad in the local rag offering a reward and on the local FB advertising page but never heard a word.

It's just stuff tho and not the end of the world.

Amazing no one looked in that box and scored those seeds before they went to auction but you came by them legitimately so you be one lucky guy!

Older seeds may need a little more care and preparation to sprout and I've had great results by scarifying old seeds in a pill jar lined with 150grit sandpaper. Shake gently for 2 full minutes then plant directly into the media they will grow in. I run some ProMix HP thru a 1mm mesh screen which is the same mesh as mosquito screen tho any kitchen strainer should be about the same. I then fill the pot with regular ProMix and scoop out a Tbsp that I replace with the screened stuff where I plant the seed about 3/4" deep. Wet everything real good and either cover with plastic or keep in a dome until they sprout and make sure there is at least a 23W - 6400K CFL or equivelent closely over them so they get light the second they emerge. Watch out that the tail doesn't come out first and flip it over if it does.

God does not detract from a man's allotted days those days spent fishing! Not my quote but one that is for sure getting me more days and I would fish 3 months out of every year back in the day. Hiking up the back of the Chilliwack river chasing all specie of salmon and steelhead was a lot of exercise that was likely most of the health benefit.

If the seeds were stored properly that's a great haul but considering you got them from an auction in September I'm guessing most of those seeds may be duds now.

I can envision 100 degree temperatures high humidity with those boxes of seeds just cooking in a shed/warehouse/auction house or storage unit.

I'd say take one of the cheaper packs and try germinating the seeds. If they sprout then possibly the seed stash is good to go. Could be a couple grand there.

I don't know what kind of Rods , Reels & Tackle you got or for that matter how much you paid but if they are still good that is a Bonus i'd be excited about !

That is an awesome bonus to fishing gear. If they are still viable there is definitely hundreds of dollars worth of seeds there. Maybe time to get off the water and in to some fields for some sowing

Thanks for the replies. I would of 'liked' your posts, but I don't know how.

After reading what @thenotsoesoteric said about the temps, I've decided to germinate 5 seeds. These were loose in a baggy. If they do not work, I will open one of the sealed packs. I've got my father-in law helping as he grows his own vegetables and herbs.

thanks @OldMedUser for your advice for germinating old seeds.

Regarding temperature, what is the ideal temp for storage of the seeds?

I took a few more photos today and ill add more to the list.
