Fist Time Indoor Grow! Limited Space. Need Some Advice! Closet Space

I am thinking about trying my first indoor grow and need some advice. I have grown outdoors successfully before, but i did not do anything special. Stuck the seed in some dirt, watered daily and let nature do its thing. This time i want to bring it inside so its in a more controlled environment free from bugs and and inconsistent weather.

-I NEED HELP FIGURING OUT THE BEST WAY TO GROW IN MY INDOOR SPACE.

-I AM ONLY TRYING TO GROW 1 OR 2 PLANTS MAX AT A TIME

Seasoned growers please try to keep it simple. Im not trying to build anything crazy serious and I am very good at DIY.

So This Is My Situation

-I have a closet space that i want to use for this grow. I would like to use a grow tent (36x20x64) so i can keep it contained (with hopes to control air flow, air temp, odors and light). This size tent will fit perfectly in the space that i have to use. I have no experience with grow tents and dont know much about them (just what i have read on retail websites).

-These are my questions

-Are grow tents good? (pros/cons)

-If grow tents are not good, what are some better alternatives?

-How much light do i need? What kind of light? (remember 1 or 2 plants max)

-What is the ideal temperature range for indoor growing? How important is temperature control?

-Best way to ventilate space and control temp?

I would use a 150w HPS with some cfl's for side lighting.
Keeping your heat under control is important. Venting from the tent right into the closet won't help (unless you got a big ass closet, lol). Seems to me like the tent adds a few extra steps (and vent fans), you're going to have to ventilate your closet anyway or the heat will build up in there.

Ideally, I would take in air from my basement and vent it into my attic. I used a jigsaw to cut my 3" vent holes.

ok this is from what i read thru the forums and i have my own stealth cabinet i made myself. but grow tents are nice i seen alot of people on this forum use them, just make sure you have enough ventilation, air flow and reflective stuff, usually comes with the tent thou.

alternative is maybe make your own cabinet, depends how much money you wanna spend, from a pc grow box to a rubbermaid grow box to a cabinet size or even in a refrigerator all depends how much you wanna spend.

light wise, i would suggest using them HPS ones i think thats what there called, but i personnaly use cfls and was able to get good results, again all depends how much you wanna spend.

temp inside according to the threads i read on this forum could be around 70-75 to 85-90.

then controlling the temp, have an intake and an outake fan, an osciallting fan would be ok, for outtake fans you could buy them in home depot, they make them, its in the duct isle, all depends on your grow space, in my cabinet i have 2 xbox 360 fans, one intake and one outake, then i have a small desk fan and a mini fan that i made, my temps are no higher than 83 i believe.

i am no pro grower but i hope this help somehow. happy growing :D

400W hps, 4 smalls plants around bulb (vertical), fan in the middle, 4" fan and carbon filter from Htg in the ceiling, cant go wrong

I grow using a tent inside a closet also...4" centri fan pulling exhaust thru a charcan, then thru 400 hps cool tube then out of tent...another 4" centri pushing in fresh air from crawlspace. This has been very successful for over a year....I grow 4-6 plants at a time....and get some great nugs perpetually. I have another small space I use to germ and veg until trasferred to the tent....I mostly grow autos and harvest every two weeks.....
Tents are great as long as you ventilate well....speed controls on fans are a must in order to control temps according to ambient temps of crawl space....

I want to try growing in a tent, i like the idea that everything is contained and controlled. Are you able to keep the odor under control? I am worried that these grow tents leak air (kind of like a bounce house where you got a blower blowing in air that fills it up and when its full the air leaks out). Or does the air just pour out of the opening you decide to use for exhaust?

As far as ventilation goes, the room the closet is in is air conditioned. I plan on leaving the closet door open most of the time to prevent hot air from building up. There is also a ceiling fan in that room that is always on (even as you read this lol). And the door that leads into that room will also stay open most of the time to prevent the room from heating up. I am thinking that an inline duct fan pushing air into the tent and and the same size fan pulling air out through a carbon filter should provide enough continuous fresh air (400w light). PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG.

Also I have seen grow lights advertised that are both HPS and MH. They say that MH light for growing and then switch to HPS for flowering? Is this a good way to go? Everyone that replied didnt say anything about MH lights.

Hi bunn, I've done it a few times. The idea is to get fresh air in there from outside to keep the co2 levels up so you need a fan for that and you also need an exhaust fan. Get a larger exhaust fan then intake and it will suck all the air through it, dont worry about the tent leaking air. You will need a separate fan to air cool your light, a 4in duct booster fan will work for a short distance, that can take air from inside the closet across the light and exhaust to the closet... if you keep the doors open.

Probably the reason nobody mentioned MH lights is because we assumed you would veg with CFL's get the white light or 6500k bulbs and you got your veg lights, then use them as supplemental lighting during flower.

So if i understand this correctly there is 3 fans total? 2 fans pushing in fresh air (1 that blows are over the light, and 1 that just blows fresh air into the tent) and then 1 larger exhaust fan pulling air out through a carbon filter? The fresh air will always be coming from outside the closet, and the a/c will keep the room in the mid 70's.

PLEASE REMEMBER IM ONLY TRYING TO GROW 1 OR 2 PLANTS AT A TIME

As far as CFL's go i had not yet considered what kind of light i was going to use. Are they better to veg your plant with CFL? I know from researching in the past (when i did my outdoor plants) that you need HPS for the flowering. Because i dont have any lights (CFL, HPS, or MH) i figured it would be easier to buy a HPS/MH grow light , instead of just the HPS and then a bunch of individual CFL lights. AGAIN PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG.

NO. you'd want passive intake for that small space. If you go bulb naked you only need 2 fans, the oscillating and the exhaust and if you want to duct your light it'd be 3 fans. Also get the HPS/MH if you can, It'd give you good quality yields

u shouldnt need a tent inside a closet just use the closet save ur self some heat issues...get a 150hps for light..and off the 2 plants u should get 2 zips or so maybe more if u do photo strains and autos prolly 2 zips of 2 plants under a 150w hps JMO

You are going to hear several different opinions here. You asked "-I NEED HELP FIGURING OUT THE BEST WAY TO GROW IN MY INDOOR SPACE." I answered.

Please note that creating an environment for one plant is the same for several, just larger fans and lights and space. One plant done right needs at least 250w HPS about 10 inches above it with at least four CFL's like 26 watt bulbs a couple inches above the side colas. Got the picture?

Now to get it to size or "veg" lighting can be a combination also. start out with the 26 watt cfls, when it gets about a foot tall add the HPS, and continue to veg. when the plant gets about 1/3 to 1/2 of the available height, (24" works good) flip to 12/12 and start flowering her out. as she grows move the lights up.

You are in a tent inside a closet. I suggested an intake fan like a duct booster to get fresh air from your window to the tent through ducting. If you were not going to do that then yea, passive intake would work. Not the best though and thats what you asked in the first place.
