That makes no sense. It has lime that buffers it to 7.

So if I add 6.2 and it buffers to 7 or I add 7.4 water and it buffers to 7, what's the point?



Soil pH does matter, but not the way your are thinking. You don't test it every day. Farmers check it once or twice a year. Maybe more on some of the higher tech farms.


You check it when you start. To see what is needed to correct it.

You are using a premade so that buffers itself.

You are not even checking the pH right.

They key to good pot is KISS. Kelp it super simple.

The more gadgets and toys and things you worry over is what causes new growers to screw up.

Don't go looking for problems or you will find them.

Oh, and that's not luck, its understanding how soil and plant nutrition work.

You tried. Some folks have to learn the hard way. I can't really blame new growers, theres so much misinformation its crazy. I think you're better off sometimes look on non mj sites for better info

The part I'm getting at is with a good soil, store bought or homemade, pH is not a concern.

I can see on a new batch of soil testing just to be sure. After that though its not an issue. Soil takes care of itself.

I sent a sample of the soil here when I moved. It gave me a base line. From there I haven't checked it again. I can turn a shovel full over and it has a dozen worms.

Not at all..don't take it the wrong way, I much appreciate your input! Sometimes online debate can seem offensive Since it is my first grow..i don't know if my soil is 'good' soil or not..i did research prior to starting..and what was available to me and within my budget, was why I got pro mix organic. The first two tiny waterings I gave it prior to its first of two serious waterings, was with tap water that prior to my first real watering, I found out it was around 8.5ph. So when I finally tested the water before its first runoff watering 6 days after sprout, I lowered it with white vinegar...2 tablespoons to the gallon which brought the ph of the water to 6.2ish. When I watered, and hearing the slight sizzle, no bubbles, I figured the ph is a bit high.
plants are doing fine it seems..though the white widow wasn't happy about the first feeding it got on sunday..showed slight clawing on Wednesday morning..hasn't gotten worse but still there..will be watering straight for the next 2 runs.
My late fall/winter grow will be done with 'cooked' soil with all the needed organic 'nutes' to plant and grow with less issue! Ph is virtually never an issue then and feeding is quite minimal.

That's the vinegar. Just let the water sit out for a day or two and then use it like it is.

I think you will.be better off that way.

The main thing is getting your watering routine down pat. That's what makes or breaks a grow.

This place is a good place to learn.

The best info is on regular grow sites for vegetables.

I grow my own food, flowers, and pot. Also upwards of 30, maybe more house plants.

No like I said I'm real new to this I got a base mix kit from buildasoil.com and added what there recipe said. This was my first time trying super soil hate to waste 100 gallons of soil. Take a look at buildasoil.com clack master Koontz style is what i used they break it down. If you don't mind looking at the mix and telling me if it should be good or not. I don't have issues in veg only when i flip to flower they start yellowing and turning purple but not the good purple it goes purple to black. No no layering it was just a mix spouse to be good from start to finish. But not so much issues galore.

At 8.5 ph, I don't feel comfortable using that to water the plants. I had the water sitting for over 48 hours..the ph doesn't change. I heard the purpose to let it sit is to let chlorine evaporate from it..but my tap water has virtually none in it. I added mylar paper today and its an enormous difference in lighting. Im not terribly worried about ph, like isaid, I only tested the runoff once, which I know u say is waste..i just went by what a lot of people did and were told to do. Plants look healthy for the most part, I think..again, first grow, and have learnt a lot, basically all I know, from sites like this and from reading countless articles/threads/videos! I have a grow journal posted here, I don't know how to add it to my signature. This is how they look today, day 20 from sprout..left auto ak, right auto white widow. Watered twice since sprout..once a week with slight runoff at 1.5L. Though it seems its drying out faster recently. I saw a leaf or two with a couple tiny drops of water on it.

Why do you not feel comfortable? Don't fix something not broke.

I'm sure using vinegar and hearing it sizzle is good for the plant.

Its not about fixing really..its about maintaining. You change the oil in your car before the engine seizes The sizzle is simply because the 6.2 ph is reacting to a higher ph in the soil...but since I gave it the two waterings..there are no issues with the vinegar..the issue I have is clawing on one plant since first feeding..which is what I should have not done..but its very minor.

I agree so much info some good some bad. Just so much. You will chase your tail if you listen to everything I myself am just learning this the hard way. Starting with a new approach letting it grow by itself KISS. is right I like your thought. Trying to hard to fix everything for nothing.

Can't count the amount of posts a day that tell people to let their water sit for 24hrs, really isn't necessary.

Do you have a pic of the whole plant from a farther shot? Don't take my word for it, but possibly lacking phosphorous?

We separate the two so that the natural moisture in the rock dust doesn't effect the raw nutrients. Dump all the material into your soil for the proper mineral and nutrient balance.

What You'll Need To Get To Finish The Recipe:

1. Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss: Available in 2.0 Cubic Foot Bales and 3.8 Cubic Foot Bales at Home Depot and most gardening stores. Notice: The 2.0 Bale will fluff up to about 3.0 Cubic Feet and the 3.8 Bale will fluff to about 6 Cubic Feet.

2. High Quality Compost or Worm Castings: Search for local compost or castings on craigslist or order some here on our website.

3. Aeration Amendment: Something to aerate the soil like perlite does in normal potting mix. We like to use Pumice and Rice hulls but you can use whatever is available to you including perlite, rice hulls, lava rock, pumice etc.

You'll notice there isn't any High P ingredient like Soft Rock Phosphate or Fish Bone Meal and after speaking with Coot about this I realized a few things. This Kit has many ingredients that contain Phosphorous at normal levels which will not be harmful to Mycorrhizal fungi. High P amendments can have a negative effect on the soil Mycorrhizal life, for this reason Coot recommends using this recipe.

Here is the Mix as written by ClackamasCoots:

Equal parts of Sphagnum peat moss, some aeration deal (pumice, rice hulls, lava rock - whatever is sitting in the garage) and finally some mix of humus - my compost, worm castings some black leaf mold I bought from the local 'worm guy' To each 1 c.f. of this mix I add the following:
1/2 cup organic Neem meal
1/2 cup organic Kelp meal
1/2 cup Crab meal (or Crustacean meal when available - it has Shrimp meal with the Crab meal. It's a local product from the fisheries on the Oregon & Washington Coasts)
4 cups of some minerals - rock dust

After the plant is in the final container I top-dress with my worm castings at 2" or so and then I hit it with Aloe vera juice and Comfrey extract. Or Borage. Or Stinging Nettle. Or Horsetail ferns. Whatever is ready.

That's it.
