has anybody ever tried to use food lights, such as 70w sodium ones or 300w halogen ones? just wondering if this would work since they arent too expensive and there fairly easy to get hold of (well in U.k anyways)

also how much heat do you think they'd produce, im guessing quite abit.

Well low wattage sodiums are ok, halogen is a definite no. But this is the cfl sub section, where everyone loves their fluoros.

oh sorry i posted in the wrong section, i love them too hence why im using them just i cant seem to find cheap 200w ones.

"Flood Lights" can come with all different types of bulbs... you could get a 70w metal halide or HPS at your locall home depot or lowes... flood lights are generally security lights... and the HPS and MH "flood lights" are among all the other security/flood lights... be careful because there are an assortment of flood lights ranging from mercury vapor to HPS to halogens

Yea I have a fluorescent flood light. It's a "Fluorex" by lights of america. They sell these at home depot with all the other security/flood lights. They only come in blue 6500k spectrum though, so you will have to find something else for flowering but it kicks ass for veg.

Oh, and for the record, the 70w HPS doesn't burn plants at all if you have adequate ventilation. People use 1000w HPS to grow all the time.

hate to ask in the cfl section, but any idea what those 70W's cost?

and those fluorex'es, what wattage are they?

I tried once MHL (Metal-halod-lamp)->(150w reflector) but it was burnt my babies, altough the distance was more than half meter. Second time i tried CFL bulbs. It's the best way from the cheap solutions. Don't need high watt numbers in one bulb, first more bulbs with lower watt numbers, because it's cheaper and you can set in more places what the plant(s) like.
