Flushing with John Innes #2?

Hi, I can't find a thread that explains exactly how I should do this. I know a lot of people don't like JI but a lot of people do, but that's off the subject :)

Is there anybody here who has used John Innes soil before? This is my first grow they are getting on fine, but I've been thinking about my final flush.

John Innes soil compacts quite easily and is very heavy stuff. How do I go about flushing with this stuff? What shall I do? How long do I flush for? Is there a routine? Radda radda. I have never flushed anything before either lol, I'm not sure if it's been in flower for 1 week or 2, which is explained on my last thread. So when would I start flushing? As it is already 6.5 PH, I wouldn't need to PH the water right?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance :leaf:

So do I just continuously jug it with non-stop water for a certain amount of time with 4 times the pot volume without stopping? Or do you flush over a period of days? I'm pretty confused

Cut back on Nutes the final 10 days (that is several watering's in dirt usually towards the end) and call it a day.

I have flushed just for flushings sake at the end (only the last 15 years did I ever hear of it even, tried it many times afterwards) and I have to be honest.. me myself.. I want my plants as healthy and green and vibrant as can be right up to the final days. I will not and can not start depriving my plant of the very substances that it is craving in it's waning days.

It's all in the dry and cure (for me) ... cut that sucker and hang it whole in a dark ventilated place for 3 weeks.. THEN start thinking about cutting her up.. the difference will be night and day.. It's one thing I will promise. If you are NOT commercial and you can afford (patience) to do it this way, simply do.. flush smush.. some do, some dont, but plants are ALWAYS more tasty and smoke better when you cut them whole (they still live for a few days after you cut them this way) and hang em to dry and season.. At least you owe it to yourself to try.


Dont worry about it getting 'too dry; when you do a whole plant.. it will be on the outside, but when you start cutting it you will see what is up. Buds will crumble like powder almost, yet the moisture will still be inside and if you seal it off for a few days it will be back to moist grass if that is the way you like it. Either way it will be the smoothest smoke..

No I haven't over nuted.... like I explained, I am now in flowering so I am planning my 'final flush', just asking advice on how to do it in general, if it is needed, and if it is any different with heavier water retaining sand like soil like John Innes is. Sorry about the confusion.

Nice one that was a really good explanation for me thank you. I will dry it whole then :) I have hear'd two sides to the whole flushing thing but that is sound advice. John Innes feeds for 5 weeks, the first time I potted was early June, the last time I repotted was last week so by the time it's time to harvest the nutes from the actual soil should be gone right? So no need to worry about that?

So - stop feeding it during the last 10 days... then straight pull it and straight into the dark. Got it. And I think I have the curing thing in the jars sussed (Or do I not even have to use jars at all during this method?). Will just be an issue of not letting it dry out too much before curing I think.

So how many weeks through would be the 10 day mark before harvest? As in how many weeks is flower roughly? 10-11 weeks? Are there any tell tale signs to look out for on the actual plant? Do I just stop any feed once the trichomes are the right colour?

Sorry for the nooby questions but I'm learning. But once I've learn't - it sticks with me :)

10 days was ambiguous and will be.. 'feel it'.. (Use the force?_)

Just guestimate.. and I don't STOP feeding the last 10 days (If I determine they are hungry) I just put them on a diet..

I also wouldn't PULL the plant.. cut it as far towards he soil as you can with a serrated knife (works) unless you have some clippers..

Mostly towards the end you just want the fruit (or whatever) to be ripe.. Like a banana, you simply don't want to pick it green.. unlike a banana it wont ripen 'much' after yo pick it.


LOTS of air circulation towards the end even at night and ESPECIALLY when you do a whole plant dry.. make sure you have 'some' moving air, but not direct on the plant.. at all times.. drying whole takes more time and you don't want anything to mold.. so check daily, keep moving air. and PATIENCE.. Very simple formula usually.. just have to adhere to it..

Ok cool give or take then. I have been Ok at understanding the plant so far I think. Is just scary as it's all new to me.

So would blackstrap Molasses etc be good for that?

Ok man. I have seen enough fruit in my time to know when it looks right I think. So I'll wait until it looks nicely ripened and the trichomes are right then 'cut' it :P

A tent sounds like a nice place to do this if I don't keep a fan on it am I right? Obviously keep the extractor fan on, but no fan inside the actual tent.

And do I put it in jars afterwards?

Ok man I got it anyways I think. I find it hard understanding things when my anxiety gets too bad lol I have to go chill with a spliff. But yeahh I won't bother flushing then I will go for your method and will jar it afterwards. I was just worried with John Innes being 'non-organic' but any nutes out the soil will be used up long before. Thanks :)
