It is one of the few crops that are actually impossible to get store-bought in the same quality that one can grow at home.

Maybe about the only plant except for Cannabis that really makes sense to grow at home just for quality reasons.

Home grown tomatoes can be harvested at peak, the store alternatives are always harvested green and then finished in storage. Huge difference in taste.

although fried green tomatoes are quite awesome as well

Agreed. I worked at one of these “pre-market distribution” facilities in high school. They have large humidity rooms and they take pallets in/out based on demand. Then they are sorted by quality on conveyors. The green ones sit there for months and I remember that smell 35 years later…

What would you flush in a DWC? What does "flushing" even mean then? The plant literally grows in nutrient solution, it is permanently "flushed", if you will.

In other systems, say ebb/flow, aero or NFT, one can replace the nutrient solution with pure water. That will stop nutrient delivery to the plant. Maybe you can call that "flushing", in my eyes it's just a change of nutrient regimen (from "X" to "NULL"). I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm still new to growing, if I start seeing 10 to 20 percent amber trichomes should I cut off the nutrients? ...I am going for the really stoned type of high...when will I know that they are ripe? And when is too ripe?

I assume, what you want is to make sure the plant does not get any more nutrients in the ripening phase, so it will use up the remaining nutrients in the bio mass, for a "cleaner" flower.

Just stop feeding the plants nutrients then in the final days, and see if that makes a difference to bud quality. There have been studies that suggest it does not make a difference, mind you (I have no strong opinion but I think the difference must be small or else this would not be a controversial topic amongst growers).

If this was your question, then you will now probably get some snarky answers around here, because it is asked every day.

You should harvest the plant one branch at a time, at different stages of ripeness, and see for yourself what you like most. There is no "perfect" point of ripeness. Even a plant harvested weeks early will get you high, it will just be less potent overall (because you cut off resin production), and the "high" will of course be different.

It's just everytime I harvest the plant itself is still very green, no yellow leaves at all...I think im harvesting too early

You probably gave away some potential for potency. At some point, resin production will mostly stop, that's the point most people consider "peak harvest". But there is no perfect moment in time for harvesting, it depends on what you want from the plant.

Since you're going for a stoner-high, you should definitely give the plants plenty of time before chopping; and as I've said, go ahead and stagger the harvest, don't take it down completely, leave some of the plant growing longer.

Then compare the different types of flower you get. It's one of the advantages of growing yourself that you can even do that.
