foam cups?

I heard somewhere that those foam cups you can get at the dollar store are good for starting in, because the roots can grow through the cup so all you have to do is plant the cup into soil and its fine, eliminating the transplant process.

I was wondering if this was true?

I have not heard that before...

I started my seeds in 12 ounce styrofoam cups because that is what I had around the house, no other reason. I try to use what I have and recycle whenever possible. Next time I start some seeds I am going to use the red party cups like so many other growers use. It seems like those red party cups grow some good plants.

yes the red party cups are great for starting and its east to transplant, just cut the cup. the cone shape promotes root growth.

i was just wondering if anyone knows if roots can grow through a styrofoam cup?

i heard that from someone and would like to know, itd be nice being able to just plant into the ground and skip the transplant, no risk of damaging anything.

I use both the form cups and party cups and roots will not grow through them.

But you just pop them out to transplant

Don't use the typical styrofoam or plastic cups thinking that you will not have to remove the seedling to transpant. There are planting containers available that you don't have to replant. Just place them into a larger container filled with the growing medium of your choice and the plant roots will grow through. Many of the so called "paper cups" we buy instead of plastic and styrofoam takes a while to breakdown in our landfills, so there is no way they will break down.
