Found a seed planted it and now here I am

Few months back I found a seed in one of my purchases. I planted the seed and set it outside with my veggies and it started to grow. Being a garden guy I figured id take this in as a new hobby and to give me something to grow indoors in the winter.

I did very little planning but figured id throw something together and adjust as needed.

IM a newbie as far as growing goes so any comments are welcome.

The smallest plant is the seed. Yesterday I purchased a couple of clones. Living in Colorado Clones cost almost nothing and I figured id have a back up in case my seed is not female. My plan after I get the hang of it and get the proper setup will be to grow just from seeds

I haven't purchased a light and will hopefully do that today. I currently have a 150Watt bulb with a horrible housing that I had laying around that my turtle wasn't using.

On my to do list:

Upgrade Light and housing (open to suggestions)
Re-pot seeded plant
Filter and Air flow (growing this in my house and would like the least amount of smell)
Get fertilizer (open to suggestions)

any other questions or comments feel free to post.

End goal is to have a good grow tent I can keep 3 plants (legal colorado limit)

Final Phase

Hey it's a start. If I had a dollar for every time I bought the wrong thing for growing... Hmmm... Seems like I've always had to go bigger in one way or another as the garden grew and grew... Thirteen years later the room is finally a finished space.

Looks like your off to a good start. My advice to you would be to do a lot of reading around here and then disregard about half of it haha. Also I'd recommend either going super cheap on all equipment so when you replace it in a few weeks/months you won't feel bad about wasting money on upgrading or to bite the bullet and just spend money on high quality equipment. I'm not from CO, but I'd be willing to bet theres a decent amount of grow equipment on craigslist in your area for probably half of what it costs retail. Also especially if you have prime, amazon has some decent priced stuff that many users here seem to like (Apollo Hort.). Just put together a complete setup 600w air cooled hood, digital ballast, bulbs, fan filter combo with speed setting, tent, timer, and misc. extras for under $500. Welcome to the club I started off just like you random seeds in a great bag. Enjoy!

Good News: Hit up the store on my way home to grab some quick upgrades.

Grabbed a Fluorowing and and upgraded bulb. Went with 200 watts over the 150 in the box (save for future use)
Also picked up a new fan

About the plants:

The Pink pot is the seed I found.....Planted seed directly in soil around 7/1/15 transplanted today (7/13/15) have not added nutrients

Blue and Orange pots are clones..1 sativa and 1 indica... Planted in rough soil on 7/12/15
Unfortunately I wasn't at the store at time of purchase so not sure what kind they are yet

Made it through the 1st night with the new lights. Ive kept them higher above the plants then id like just to manage my temperatures and will adjust. I sat at around 80 degrees most of the night (currently no inline fan) BUT my humidity level is around the 40% range. I live 5700 feet above sea level in the mountains and deal with very dry air. Ive seen some people who live and die by humidity levels and some people who don't care. Any thoughts on this subject would be great. I plan on upgrading my tent with carbon filter and inline as I really need to keep the smell down as much as possible.

One thing I would do for sure is lower that light. You can put CFLs much closer than that. That will help with the stretching on that seedling.

Thanks I moved the light much closer after monitoring the temps after the 1st night.

Update:
  • Slowly starting to get some growth.
  • Moving the tent to a better location tonight and will hopefully get a carbon filter and fans this weekend and start moving some air, any suggestions on filters and fans is greatly appreciated (trying to keep the smell down). Based on the info i got on the site I think I'm looking at a gator filter.
  • Found a seed in my Durbin poison ill throw in some soil this weekend
  • Still haven't added nutrients
  • Humidity is still low (Temps between 80-85) and see lots of mixed info on if the humidity levels matter and a lot has to do this certain strains. Since I'm unsure on the strains ill keep trucking along and hope the new location will add some humidity.
Any suggestions on places to order seeds online?

Updated my lights to Apollo 600W setup today rolling MH till flowering and going HPS

Hopefully adding carbon filter and airlflow tomorrow cause heat is an issue so rolling Apollo at 300W (50%)

Still could use suggestions for carbon filter and airflow with cool tubes

Also seeds? My local shops don't have a lot and would like to get others thoughts.

To use the filter properly you need a ventilation fan to run inline through the cool tube. It looks like you'll need either a 4 or 6 inch Phresh Filter and a matching size vent fan. Don't forget the ducting! Also, you want to if possible vent the warm/hot air out of the room ur tent is in.

Thanks went with 6inch and Im able to keep the room I'm venting in cool, but my tent won't support the carbon filter so going to have to build a support onto my tent... Any issue with setting the filter vertically on the ground next to the plants?

Going to start flowering soon

Any suggestions on preparing the plants for the 12/12 and the HPS or just let it roll?

I noticed a few leafs on the clones with yellow tips.. guessing that has to do with the fact i haven't added Nutes and I'm sure the shop had them on a Nute schedule? or do i have another issue?

Turned to flowering this morning.. Going to run lights off during the day to keep the heat down. threw in the HPS yesterday to get the plants use to it. Was able to run it at the full 600W at a temp of 86 thru the night. Im guessing my worry will be humidity during the flowering.

Hard to say since I added my filter and fan shortly after putting in the HPS, but for the little time I had it running with no fan the HPS did run a few degrees warmer. With no fan pushing out the hot air I had to keep both bulbs at 50% or temps would be 93+. Now with fan running HPS is running 600W or 100% at night and holding around 83-81.
