Fruit Flies Bad To Get In My Grow Area?

Couldn't find information on this really, saw fruit flies do eat decaying organic matter which I shouldn't have since no dead leaves. This is not fungus gnat's, flying insect's always find their way to my room lol. Sometimes I have seen the odd one fly towards the light in my box & I worry about one getting trapped after I close it up at dark time. This shouldn't be a problem right? Thanks in advance

Get some fly strips

i would check for other pests like whitefly/aphid, its kind of unusual to have a noticable amount of fruit flies around your plants with nothing else going on.

Thanks All. MyNameIsMike didn't see any chat about fruit flies only gnats. This only happened after we started saving compost, never seen 1 in there during the day and it is always only 1. greenvalley same thing, but I have noticed a very tiny light green boomerang type spot on bottom leaf that looks like a snail made his way along lol. It's been same size for a long time now though with no others and it is like 3/4 centimeter wide so. Also I haven't fed my plant yet and bottom 2 fan leaves are turning light on the edges, so I thought it had to do with that kinda.. It's 5 days into flower after a 4 week veg in a 6 month miracle grow soil. Heard this happens to older leaves too, but I do keep a close eye on her for pests. Think I'll just do what Lordhooha said and get strips until I see a major problem. Thanks again

I posted the link in the event they weren't fruit flys as they look nearly identical to gnats when you compare bugs. If you are 100% they're fruit flys, the fly strip will help but I have a trick I do that works too.

Take a small sauce bowl or cup whatever, pour in about 3-4 tbsp apple cider vinegar, wrap it with clear wrap, poke about 10 holes that should be no bigger than the fruit fly and let it sit out. They're attracted to the vinegar, climb in the holes and can't get back out.

Ive always thought my gnats see me as their God, for this i treat them fair and actively manage their population so we can both coexist peacefully. Oh i have to rain down fire and fury on any little coup d'etat but generally we get along and since the whole Moses and the parting of the fertilizer sea incident theres been no other serious uprisings to speak off.

Thinking of putting a monument of myself in the middle of my tent for them to circle but gona reduce my yeild a little so not dead set on this yet although the free sugar water program for everyone has already been met with great success

Nice Nice, thanks for the reminder , I did check that post before I made this one too. We used to do that when we wanted to get rid of them in are kitchen, think with the random one I see I'll probably attract more then I capture lol. We did this with fruit though, not sure if cider will do the exact same but I think it would. I'll just put it in are kitchen where they coming from, which is all the way downstairs too lol. Anyway's last thing I may as well mention although it might be best in that other thread, Grateful Grower on youtube I learned a lot from. GnatNix seem's to be great for that issue, you just pour some on top of the soil like sand or something. Cheers all and lol Kingrow

If gnats are present in your area they will always keep coming, for this reason its sometimes futile to try keeping gnat free.

I ran into this issue now with having worm castings and I tried planting seeds in there. Well, 2 didn't pop then 4 didn't pop the castings may be too hard to push up through? I broke one off as I overdid the fan I think too the stems were so hard as I touched the top to clean off some diatomaceous earth powder that I had put down and it split about 1/2 way up. I am trying some clonex on the top 1/2 of the split I doubt it will survive it's too small. The fruit flies Still manage to get into the castings over the fans objections I added two more cups to the bottom so they can't crawl up anymore. They can fly in and out of the castings rather easily. I wonder if hygrozyme would work and if I should use it on these small girls? I do not want to wipe out my super soil mix. I also bought Gnat Nix which is suppose to be great according to the "grateful grower" (youtube) uses to prevent all this as the gnat nix is a type of cut glass & at 2 to 3 inched is suppose to prevent them from going in and climbing out too. Are the fruit flies able to wipe out a whole grow, I made a super soil conversion down to my scale of needs? Or as "My Name is Mike" is trying to coexist with them? The ones "My Name is Mike" to me look bigger then what I have Living in Florida bugs are a way of life to some degree here. Any help is appreciated & I thank you in advance for the help. This is only my 2nd grow I know so little and have a long way to go here yet.

Has anyone else had these issues with fruit flies or gnats coming from worm castings? Can I leave the gnats/fruit flies in the castings or should I try and attack them from within the soil with hygrozyme? As soon as I watered them if felt like they came from the eggs in the casting to the air for me.


I have mixed these ingredients for 6 - 15 lbs grow pots in canvas. I learned to keep worm casting really wet or it gets too hard for the seeds to come up.

The soil formula I have used. Do I have to keep this moist all the time for transplanting them to the big grow pot? The pots have been made since last week. I managed to get it all on dollies so I can move them around as I am sick and unable to lift/move them around.

1 Nature's living soil 10 lbs very smelly for sure but seems to have a great start they have everything in it to start and I was advised to mix this with 1lbs to 1.5 Coco Coir to start the base mix they were saying dr Earth's was holding too much water thus my reason for the Coir and Dr. Earths but coir as the startup.

2 Dr. Earth's Organics 38 lbs Vegetable Garden Planting Mix, 1.5 CF

3 Dr. Earth's Organics 38 lbs 803 Natural Choice® All Purpose Compost, 1.5 Cu.ft.

4 30 lbs worm castings Now was this my mistake?
5 Bat Guino 5 lbs
5 Coco Coir 25 lbs
6 Roots Organic 20 lbs an almost but not quite a soil for the whole grow

I had to order more seeds from my mistakes from trying from seed to in worm castings.
So it will be the water or plain soil mix to start and castings on the bottom of the cups.
I was using the super soil formula from agzaa's site to reduce down from the huge subcools mix by percentage.

Knat Nix my dude! I use as preventative every grow. It is a useful tool in deterring insect larva from becoming a problem. If u have fruit flies or any of that sort, wing insects, this product will help. Also, if u don’t have fly strips, as suggested above, duct tape works just fine! Just set it sticky side up around base of plant.

Thank you Greens thumbs Mcgee, I will do this even in my cups after the seeds pop the surface I got some today from a fast order place online. I hope to one day pay you back if I can even catch up to a well-known member, I will pay it forward for sure. I have duct and metal tape and a few strips of the old fly strips. Thanks.
