Sorry Wikid, he lost all credence when he stated that people who dont tip get there food messed about with and used the threat of such behaviour against all potential non-tippers. Being English I have a totally different take on this as people over here dont believe in tipping the same as you American's. Waiting staff over here get nearly £6 per hour minimum wage and tips are on top. The guy is a moron in my eyes. Tip or I scratch your car????????? There are people who genuinely dont have enough money to tip as well, to which he retorts, if they can afford to eat ou then they can afford to tip-flawed argument. I used to have an old couple come to my restaurant for Xmas dinner every year and they were very poor pensioners, the cost per head for xmas dinner was £52 per head and the way they afforded it was to put a pound each out of their pensions in a jar every week for a year, could they afford to leave a tip? Of course they couldnt, did my staff care? Of course they didnt...Here nedeth the Woo rant...
IMO you are comparing apples to oranges.
Under the american system, if you don't tip your server, then that server has just paid out their own money for the "privilege" of serving you. I can't speak for anyone else, but I go to work to earn money, not to pay out money for the privilege of working. If american servers earned an hourly minimum wage it would be a different story altogether, but that's not how it works here.
I agree with the statement that if you can not afford to leave a tip, then you can not afford to eat in that restaurant.
I think it's great that your servers treated that old couple well. But I suspect their attitude would change if they had to pay out their own cash in order to serve that couple.
With that being said, fucking with peoples food is wrong. If you have a regular customer that doesn't tip, just give him the level of service they are paying for. Make sure your paying customers get taken care of first. If the nontipper's food happens to get cold while this happens, so be it. If they don't get timely refills because you are busy with paying customers, that's their problem. There are a lot of more subtle ways to make your point without spitting in someones food. A good manager will understand and not give you a hard time about it. Eventually that person will find a different restaurant to eat at.
IMO our system is flawed. I would personally rather pay our servers minimum wage, with tips only for exceptional service. But under the current system, you are stealing from a server by not tipping.
One thing I have not seen brought up here...How much do you tip a server at a buffett?
