If it got the roots it wasn't rabbits. It was an armidillo or opussum. They search the fresh dug soil for grub worms. Chicken wire works good but don't build a fence. Take the wire and cut a square a little bigger than the hole you dug. In the middle of the square cut a little square to put your plant through. Lay the chicken wire down flat on the ground and cover it with dirt. This is for stealth as well if i see fences in the woods i know something is up. Put your plant in the middle hole and when an armidillo comes along and tries to dig the chicken wire will hurt his claws and he will go somewhere else. As for rabbits the cheap and easy way is to get some dog hair either by shedding or an electric razor. I have long haired dogs and they like getting a trim for the summer. Moth balls work great too. Just sprinkle some in the bushes around your spot.
