I can grow pot somewhat proficiently. but tomatoes have become my nemisis. Recently I started in-doors, and moved my pathetic seedlings out side into planters with top- notch garden mix. They look like crap and I am losing my patience with this . Does anyone know any secrets for tomatoes and chile peppers? I would love to have both survive, but I seem to suck at growing food. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I always start twice as many from seed than I think I need because I always lose a lot. I basically do that with all the plants I start indoors to transplant outside. And tomatos always look like shit for a week or so after transplanting.

And when I direct sow the seeds then I plant a lot and thin them out when necessary :)

I started 50 seeds because I don't know any better and have had 8 survivors. Is this normal? And out of my 8. 6 look like they might go. I like that tomatoe seeds aren't priced the same way as weed, because I'd be broke

Ive had tomatoes growing in the ground out in the backyard for years now, just water every once in awhile, I never do anything else. And every year I get huge fat tomatoes.

I usually start my tomato seeds right around Easter.
When I start my tomato seeds I pour the whole package into a small jar of water and put the cap on.
Then I stick the jar on top of my fridge for about a week.
After a week the tap root should be right around a 1/4 inch long to a 1/2 inch long.
As many seeds that I'm going to plant, I soak that many peat pellets in PH'd water and JumpStart.
Then I take an unsharpened pencil and poke half inch holes in the peat pellets.
I stick seeds in the peat pellets while using tweezers, with the tap root facing down.
Cover the hole up.
Put the peat pellet in a small 3 inch pot.
I fill the pot with decent soil, like HappyFrog or something.
Then I put all the pot's in a tray.
Then I put the tray on a heat mat.
Then I put a dome over the tray.
I spray the inside of the dome with water twice a day.
Once they sprout, I put the plants under my vegg light.
When watering I put a half a teaspoon of jumpstart into a gallon of water, that's it.
JumpStart promotes root growth.
I still keep them on the heat mat until they're about 2 inches tall, and I also keep the dome on top of the tray.
Once they get to be 4 inches tall, I transplant them into a 6 inch pot.
At this time I get rid of the dome.
But I still use my fogger to create humidity inside my vegg room.
Once they're 10-12 inches tall, I transplant them into 2 gallon pots.
When they're this tall, I start using nutrient. But only half strength for a couple of weeks.
Once they're transplanted into the 2 gallon pots, I stick them in my sunroom.
At this point my plants are still in the 2 gallon pots in the sunroom waiting to be put into the ground.
I won't put them in the ground until after June 1st.
I feed once a week, and water when needed.
Once they're in the ground I'll put a trellis over them.
My vegetable garden gets full sun from sun up till about 6 at night.

I tried growing tomatoes indoors in DWC.............Dumb Mistake. They don't make male and female tomato plants like they do pot plants. You need BEES or Butterflies to polinate them.

I am 60 years old and have grown tomatoes outdoors for 40 years, every year. I've had my garden and tomatoes in a magazine and in the newspaper becasue of the success and size.

I first buy LARGE plants, at Lowes or Home Depot, at least 18 inches tall. I buy BIG BOYS and BETTER BOYS.

I dig a hole big enough to bury a BIG dog in, like two feet deep, two feet wide, and I leave that dirt on the side of the hole. In the hole, I put half Peat Moss and Half Top Soil, or Potting Soil. I used to put lots of COTTON Lint that I got from the local cotton mill but they have closed. Now I use cottom from an old pillow, mixed in well. You can use some foam rubber from a pillow, it is to absorb and hold water in the hole, 24/7, and it keeps the soil from packing or hardening. I add a small amount of rotten cow manure and mix it well in the hole.
I plant the plant HALF way in the hole, covering HALF of it with the fresh soil mix. With HALF the plant in the dirt, and the dirt very fertile and very loose, the roots will grow two feet wide and two feet deep, and give you a giant plant with giant tomatoes.
I do also add a little Liquid Karma to the soil.
