Diatomaceous Earth is an easy safe and deadly way to kill and prevent Fungus Gnats from existing in your soil.
Just sprinkle some on top of the soil.....after a few days no more gnats.
It is non toxic and relatively inexpensive.

How does it work?
To insects DE is a lethal dust with microscopic razor sharp edges. These sharp edges cut through the insect's protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it applied as a wettable powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides.

What is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a remarkable, all-natural product made from tiny fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous Earth is a
naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times. 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite. The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder to us. It is a mineral based pesticide. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural grade diatomite. However, the continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.

Man I forgot about DE. A farmer that I used to know used it and just raved about it. I think he sprinkled it on his cereal, LOL. Great idea Wavels; thanks for the post.

mosquito dunks and gnatrol work biologically eggs are laid in the gnat larvae and they then hatch and eat the gnat from the inside out. no larvae no adults this is the safest and best way to go harmless to plants pets people etc... otherwise fine aquarium gravel can be laid on top of your soil 1or2 inches deep the gnats have trouble getting to the soil to lay eggs. also diatomaceous earth is another natural insecticide it is fossilized diatoms that are sharp and basically stick to insects and drain them of there fluids it can be put directly on the soil or anywhere you dont want bugs to traverse. you can also water your soil w/neem oil this will kill the larvae the life cycle is 8 days though so you must do this for 2 weeks. sticky traps help w/ adults there are also sticky products you can paint on the inside rim of your containers the adults get stuck and die. i also have used rubbing alchol 70% and directly sprayed adult gnats and the surfice of the soil. spray a lower leaf to see if this bothers your plants mine werw unaffected. also let your soil dry beetween waterings if your soil is to wet youll have hundreds in no time one last thing leave a glass of water in your grow room they will be atracted to it and will drown i keep a betta fish in the jar so he can eat the gnats little bastards. they are easily controllable if you try some of tehse methods hope this helps.:peace:

I used a drench with a product called Azamax.that took care of the larvae. Then covered my table (Hydro ebb and flo) with panda paper to stop the mothers from laying more eggs and then put up a couple sticky traps to kill the adults. They live about 4 weeks tops (complete life span) but can lay up to 1000 eggs each during that time. So do the math. This insect you def. need to attack with a few different strategies. My roots get oxygen from the water coming up from the bottom so thats why your able to cover your medium completely air tight from the top.not sure about soil. But this method worked good for me
