Eddy Lepp, a Rastafarian minister and Vietnam War veteran, has served 5 of his 10 years in prison for growing medical marijuana on a large-scale farm near Highway 20 in Upper Lake. He says he was operating under the guidelines of California's Prop 215 and SB 420.
According to High Times, Lepp was the first person tried and acquitted under California Prop 215 in December, 1998 for the cultivation of over 150 cannabis plants. In August, 2002, the gardens were raided for more than 250 plants, but charges were never pressed. In August, 2004 Lepp's operation was raided again, with over 32,500 marijuana plants. Lepp was out on bail when he was arrested during another raid on his farm on February 16, 2005. The charges for the 2004 and 2005 raids were made into one case; new charges were for the cultivation of over 6,000 plants and allegedly selling a pound of pot to a wired DEA undercover on January 19, 2005.
In 2008, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Lepp said he was entitled to use cannabis for religious and medical reasons, but was not allowed to use those claims during his federal trial, according to Adela Falk in The Human Solution.org. He said that the marijuana plants were not his, but were owned by individuals who belonged to his ministry, the Multi Denominational Ministry of Cannabis and Rastafari.
"If anyone would like send Eddy Lepp a $10 book from Amazon.com, it would mean the world to him," Larry Fabisch told Lake County Magazine this week. "He needs to keep his mind stimulated with classics ("Journey to the Center of the Earth," etc.) or philosophy like Alan Watts, art books (how to draw, etc.) If you would like to just send him a letter, be sure to put your return address on your letter and he will write back."
