They need to be cooled. Its basically running a bare bulb and they get HOT. If you're going to run air cooled DE bulbs look at the ac/de hoods.

I am running a couple of 1000w magnetic hps and they get hot!

Is this in place of their fixture? Thier article did not explain very well. Is it still hps? would I need gavita's ballast?

That is the bad boy hood. When you air cool it there is actually a pocket above the bulb that pulls the hot air out. You can also pull out the glass if you choose too. To my knowledge there is not a MH DE bulb on the market yet.

I can tell you that my buddy bought two of these lights and put them on movers and was able to take out his 4 1000watts and is now saving money on power, and it easier to cool his room.now he is getting better yields, then with the 4000watts. also he is only running the lights on the 750 setting..

If you can get your hands on these lights you should!!!!!

Pics? Sorry but this claim is pretty bold imo. I need some proof as my sources don't claim such dramatic improvements.

I have 4.

I like them a lot.

No they don't run cool. A rep for gavita said that the de bulb should not and isn't designed to be air cooled. I can't quite remember why.

They don't produce quadruple the yield or anything lol.

They have pro's and con's and I would say they're not for most indoor growers.

i always put a small muffin fan on my ballast, digi and core. would that be of some help to keep the ballast cool, or are they just real hot? cooler usually means a longer life span.

Probably not. According to a sales rep, they are well engineered for quality and longevity. The ballast is a sealed design. The reason the ballast is affixed to the light upright is because the heat is supposed to more efficiently dissipate off the cooling fins.

That sounds great and all, but the end result is that the light\ballast is very tall and sometimes requires a taller ceiling than average.

Any ways the ballast heat isn't of much concern its the bare bulb.

what kinds of yields are you seeing from your 4 gavita room ? I have just purchased 4 1000 DE gavitas for a 13 ftx 13ft area with 13 ft high ceilings, thought i needed 6 for a space like this but my buddy insist that i should be good with 4 in an area this size.please some info and feedback

Yields are good. I like Gavitas a lot but like I said, they are not magic. Maybe a 5% to 15% increase in ppfd than your standard single ended digital with mismatched brand bulb. To me thats a big deal.

Depends on what you want. Maybe 4 is enough for you.

Meh, I could spend a long time talking about it, but basically if you can control the enviroment, it would be worth it to use more lighting.
