Germ problem

I have been trying to germ seeds for awhile but i seem to have a problem, i have a bag filled with dank seeds collected for few months, been trying to germinate them with no success altho i threw some seeds in my backyard and i got some growth in there. (But now its too cold to plant outside.) I have tried the papertowel method, kinda fluctuated with the temperatures so i guess it was mainly my mistake because i kept them abit cold the first day then i put them on the router and they got too hot i think, because the paper towel became dry, anyways 2 days ago i put some seeds in a shot glass, about 6 seeds and they all sunk except one, they sunk on day one but no taproot yet, how long do i have to wait for a taproot?
Oh and another question - Is it okay if i make my soil mix and just let it stay in the pot until the plant germs?

fold up a few layers of paper towels so its a little thick and put some in the middle. wet the paper towels and place into a ziplock bag.

This is what I do and I have a 100% success rate so far ~

Get some paper towels, fold them so it's thick (Like the guy said above), wet the paper towels and then put the seeds on the paper towels about 1" apart. Fold the paper towel and put it in a cup with about 1"-2" of water then put the cup in a warm dark place. I usually put the cup in my sock draw :). In my experience it has taken up to 2 weeks for a seed to sprout a tap root, but mostly it's just 2-3 days.

The problem with random bag seed is that there is no accounting for genetics. If you try to germinate enough of them you will eventually get sprouts. The longest I have ever had to wait was 3 days.

True, but its my first grow and its on a very small scale, so i think its a waste for now, later on i`ll most likely get some good seeds.

You don't have to wait for the taproot to form underwater, in fact it is best if you do not, as soon as the seeds sink to the bottom of the glass (they may need to be tapped gently with a clean finger.) they are ready to be planted into fresh soil and watered.

The way I did it: I took a Tupperware and filled it with toilet paper...then made sure that all parts of the the paper was wet... Lift up a section of the toilet paper and place seed/seeds, spaced appropriately. Make sure that all parts of the seed are touching the moist toilet paper. Then place Tupperware in a dark area of your house and forget about it for a day or two. Check back on it every now and then to see if the toilet paper is still wet. If it is dry wet it again. In about 2-3 days tap root should pop.

Helpful hint: when you place the germinated seed into the medium you are using, I placed a plastic zip lock bag over the top of the pot and placed it under my light. This raises humidity levels making it ideal for germinated seed to sprout faster. As soon as it sprouts remove bag and commence you veg light schedule.
