Germinating. I’ve done it for years. Now, I’m confused.

straight in the soil i get 100% germination rate so i don't know why i would soak and put a seed in a paper towel and then transplant it into soil
Well if you were me it would be to watch the process happen for the shear enjoyment of it. Can't see the magic when it's buried in soil or a plug. It is also helpful on less viable seeds. Sometimes older seeds need a bit of help.

My 2 cents...been growing weed for over 40 years, outside til autos happened 20 years ago...then mostly indoors...it's all the same....my advantage is growing up/living in a farming community, managing a 'seed' (legal) company in the 70s....germing doesn't change...it's all these fucking forums causing a paper towel shortage.
Getting temp/medium moisture right and it's all good. Straight to medium for me is 100%. I absolutely loathe losing a seed!

LOL, paper towel shortage. You are right, nothing has changed. Provide heat/moisture, if the seed is viable it will spring to life. I like my paper towel method for the reasons I stated above but it is defiantly not necessary to get a plant to grow. Also never lost a seed with my method although some are heavy handed or use the wrong product.

That's a good plan. Soaking seeds is just to help soften the shell, moist soil will do the same thing. Seeds dont need to sink to accomplish that. It is true that If left sunk you can kill the seed as they do need oxygen. You can go to paper towel or straight into medium. I use the soak and paper towel method just because I like to see the process happening but in the end it's just extra steps that are really not needed.

Hi all,

I’ve germinated seeds for years & have been steadily growing good strains now for the last three years. Today, I’m wanting to start germinating my 2021 seeds. So, I thought I’d refresh my old memory on germinating. I used to always do it in a damp paper towel. It worked very well. Last year, I did it in the glasses of water.....Again, they did well (makes me wonder why I’m asking :p).

So, when I searched today & was reading, I saw a ‘new’ way I was unaware of & am wondering why it would work better:
they are saying to:
Put in water (I’ve seen different times)
then, put in damp paper towels.

Why do it twice? Wouldn’t just one way work better? What makes this way better and..
while I’m at it.......opinions on putting in water or using paper towels.....which do you prefer?

thanks!
Agree with most opinions here, think the water softens the shell and hinge a bit, the seeds that sink absorb(?) enough to germ. I go straight into soil, hinge down so the seedling does a 180 to pull the husk off. Solo cup with 125g HappyFrog, teaspoon of water and cover for 48 hours at 70-80°F, never fails. HF has humic acid for seeds and mycorrhizae for roots.

The best way I have found is soak 24-48 hrs in dilute seaweed extract ( contains natural gibberellic acid - a germinating hormone) in a warm dark place (I use old black plastic film cannisters in the airing cupboard), then straight into seeding compost. I have tried various different ways, but have found that the seaweed extract makes all the difference, even helps to germinate old seeds.

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but thought I'd add my two cents.
