Occam's Razor, the simplest solution is generally better than a complex one. Which can mean, the more steps you add, the more you increase your chances of failure. But to each his own Seeds naturally sprout in moist soil, not in papertowels and baggies. But some like the anxiety of regularly checking the seeds progress. The only way your soil pot is going to dry out is by completely neglecting it - maybe. The seed will be out of the soil by about day 4-5, and the tap root will already be 3-4 inches down - where the water is.
And I totally take the blame for the killing those seeds. I made the mistake of using the paper towel method with fresh seeds. I have used that method countless times on bag seed. You see threads regularly with this subject, but you DON'T see similar threads nearly as often about how they planted their seeds and nothing grew.
Not being a hater to all you that soak your seeds or whatever, more power to ya. I just find that if you plant them, which is what is natural to them, you eliminate this issue completely. IF a cracking method doesn't work for you, switch to planting, if it DOES work for you, then stick with it i guess. Apparently the paper towels aren't working for this guy, so he may be looking for alternatives.
