You can gently break the stem and fold it to close to 90 degrees horizontal. Just don't sever the thing. Put some clear scotch tape around the break and use string to hold the bent over part to a bit less than 90 degrees. It is nerve wracking for sure, but unless you sever it or are too violent with the break, the buds and leaves above the break will never even flinch. This happens all the time. I have done this method many times now and have had no problems. Even during flowering,

I will post pictures later to give you some confidence. The stem WILL be perfectly strong enough again. You just have to keep feeding and watering them. Don't slack.
I have a situation currently where some hydro farms are a couple feet taller than soil grows and about 8 main branches had to be fractured and held horizontal. One nice result is that the branches above the break will all become (albeit smaller) colas as they turn back up toward the light. You will still have the main cola at the end.

I have done this a few times and broke the stock too. The plant didn't heal and I ended up removing it. Plant still did fine.
What I didn't see here is anyone mentioning that if you pinch the stalk, about half way through and keep pressure on it while bending it reduces the possibility of snapping it.

Snapping it is fine! You should tenderize the meat of the stem between your fingers by gently rolling it between your forefinger and thumb. Then fracture it. It is FINE! Just don't break the fucking thing in half or sever the stem. they will not even slow down. Just make sure you tie the newly horizontal part, the part above the break, to a string to support it while it solidifies. bah for fucks sake... let me go take some pictures. be back in a few...
