GG Bastard Series - Colombian Gold

Those are way too small. You may have to wait more than a week. They might not do much branching while in those solo cups. I usually wait untill I pot up and they recover then they take off and branch out giving you something to clone.
Yeah I was kind of eyeing the 5 gallon pots last night thinking about transplanting but I'd just watered and wanted to let the soil dry a little first ...not dry dry just not soaked ...seemed like it'd be a mess with them freshly watered. Figured I could do all 3 at the same time too if I give GG 1 some more time to get a little more established / caught up. That one was started late because the 1st seed didn't germ :X

For me a mostly dry transplant is the way to go. I find the rootball stays together much better reducing the risk of shock or mishaps.
I start everything in party cups. Come transplant time I fill the new pot with my soilless mix, put an empty cup in the middle where the new one will go, water well, remove empty cup and I'm left with a perfect hole for my transplant to go into. Then I water the transplanted part into its new home. Done.

That sounds like a good plan - I've actually never done a full out transplant. With the autos I just cut the bottom of the solo cups off and set them in a bigger pot, because everyone said autos don't have time to recover from a transplant. Curious to see how long it takes to recover from the shock of a transplant. Do you normally just use regular water for a transplant or do you like to use any products tht promote new root growth? I've still got 3/4 of a bottle of Biobizz root juice and AN's Sensi Zym - might be worth split testing it and using the products on one and straight water on another to see if it makes a difference in the recovery

Forgot to mention I threw down a fem'd Critical Sensi Star from Delicious Seeds last night for another prospective mother. Might as well have a variety going

Looking good Ayr0n, but agree with polo, they're too small to be taking cuttings yet. I usually wait until they're just about to be flipped to get good sized cuttings as they tend to root easier/faster when they're bigger. As a backup, if I don't get the cuts I want or they don't take you can take clones around 3 weeks into flowering, those take a bit longer to root/veg (2 weeks longer typically as they need to re-veg before they start to take off) but produce clones with tons of branching, even without training. Sometimes I take them at 3 weeks into flowering on purpose, have a couple going right now to see how they produce when grown out into larger plants and minimal training.

Hey Ayr0n, I just water them on transplant, wait for them to dry then get back to feeding them, can't think of any incidents where they didn't take or even slow down. The trick which old schoolers will tell you is to let them get to a good size for the original container, even almost root bound before transplanting them, 2-3 times the size of the container is a good rule of thumb. Don't over-think it, remember they're weeds ;)

When I transplant I give em maxi-crop liquid seaweed, root stimulator, and a lil superthrive, all pH'ed of course. I don't give them any nutes at transplant because in my mind I want them to get a lil bit hungry so those roots go out looking for food.
I normally don't see any shock from t-planting but if I do it's only for a day or two.

That's a good point I forgot to mention. I too like a lil root circling in my cups at transplant so there is more root contact with new soil or whatever.

So you guys don't think I should take an early cutting off each of the GG's just to sex them? Was hoping to weed out any males early on. I've got an empty tent right now - was gonna try to grab a cut off each of the 3 gg's when there's enough plant material to actual cut something off, then get them rooted and throw them on 12/12 in the other tent so I can figure out if any are male and kill em...

I don't see much of a place to get an early cutting from.
You can't rush this thing man. In a couple more weeks you'll have preflowers, you already know what female preflowers look like.

Yeah true. Unfortunately I know what male pre's look like too since herman kept feeling like visiting my tent :X Just getting excited again lol. My original enthusiasm died off a little after the first harvest just because I was content smoking on what the autos produced, but it feels good to be back n the game ;)

Yeah, too early Ayron, most strains you'll be able to tell before they get too large. Taking cutting at this stage may slow you down more than anything. I take my chances when doing regs and wait for them to show sex, it's burned me once in the last year pulling 3 males out of 5 seeds, but for the most part it's 50/50 or better, I just plant more than I'm planning to run and it usually works out.Of course, I don't mind pulling the odd male but I have somewhere to collect pollen if needed so it's a bonus to me.

I just popped 4 regs of Harlequin's that I was hoping to get at least one male, all 4 are f'n fems! If I didn't want the males I would have pulled 50/50 $#%! Regs are troublesome sometimes, gotta be flexible but you can pull some nice phenos, worth it imo.

AyrOn transplanting those will make them grow dramatically quicker. I just took cuttings tonight off smaller then usual plants. But they were already showing thiers sexes. Ive been thinking about playing with the light hours a little bit. Ive always just done 24 hours straight to 12/12. Im thinking about going from 24 to 20 then to 16 down to 12 using 1 week increments. I think growerr does something similar. But that should speed up the sexing phase. And glad to hear you switched from auto-fems. Personally I stay away from both, I have always prefered reg all the way. You bred them, clone them and less of a chance of them going hermie on you. I have always thought auto-fems were aimed for newbs because you can't, clone them, make moms or really breed them so you have to always buy more of them. Every single strain I have grown was either given to me for free, or recieved a free cutting or I bred them myself. I have never once paid for seed or clone.

There's definitely more possibilities with photos - I really like the concept of autos, and the simplicity so I'll be running them again eventually but the idea of playing mad scientist, cloning and breeding new strains, is something I couldn't pass up soo here we are

I like your idea of incrementally reducing the photo period kind of like replicating natural light changes - right now these are on 24/0 but I'd like to move to 18/6 to give the bulb and ballast a break n also read a dark period is important for root development (they seem to produce roots just fine on 24/7 though...)

I try when I have the space available to reduce the times gradually but not always possible. Idk if it helps but they seem to transition well so I do it when I can. After a bunch of different tests I've settled on 20/4 for the first few weeks to get them going, usually 4 weeks, then 18/6 for veg. If I'm short on space and need to hold them off a bit before flowering I'll even drop it down to 16/8 the odd time.

The one that has been really beneficial to me has been dropping them from 18/6 (or 16/8 if i tried to slow them down a bit) to 14/10 for the last 7-10 days when I have the space. That gets them stretched before going into flowering and gets them pre-flowering. Like this for my trellis style grows because by the time they get into 12/12 they're pretty well at their final height/size. This makes it easier to tie and open them up with the trellises. It also doesn't seem to slow down the overall progress/time as they go into flowering much faster than straight to 12/12. This method may also be beneficial for SCROG for the same reasons, to get that canopy shaped where you want it.

That said, I'll be flipping the next round straight into 12/12 due to space in my veg cabinet. Have 2 rounds in there so I can't really go to 14/10 or the 3 remaining plants will go into stretch too early and I want to veg those remaining plants for a couple of weeks. So in this case I'll probably wait to tie them to the trellises until a week or so into 12/12.

I also employ the light reduction technique. Usually going from 18/6 to 16/8 to 14/10 in two week increments. Like GroErr said, it helps get the stretch and sexing out of the way before flipping to 12/12.

Ordered some stuff for cloning today...I know most of it isn't essential but it won't hurt to have a propagation dome or a heated mat around the house - probably help w/ starting seeds too

riu_cloning.PNG

I got all 4 of the plants transplanted - put 3 in 7 gallon fabric pots (only filled ~5 gallons of medium in them so there's some room for compost teas and watering without making a mess), GG 3 is in a 5 gallon one. Pinched off the new growth on everyone to get some more tops going - In my head it seems like catching the new growth while it's still small and pinching it off would be less stressful than cutting a decent sized top off but who knows. The haven't seemed to skip a beat from the previous "topping" or the transplants. This plant is a lot tougher than I thought - switching over from being extra cautious and pussy footing everything with the autos to being borderline abusive to the photos ;)

The 2 bigger ones are getting their first dose of silica blast tonight (real light). Gotta get the other tent set up with that 400w LED panel, and then order another tent for breeding soon. My girl 'gave me' another room to use (yea yea) so I can expand this op a little. She's really coming around - only took 7 years lol
