I was thinking why call it glove compartment? It must have held gloves originally. Still at the time gloves were popular Many other miscellaneous items could be kept. I bet that sold the ride when some dudes wife said O look dear its got a glove compartment. SOLD.

Back when the motor car was first becoming popular it was only the wealthy that could afford such luxuries...Furthermore it was absolutley unheard of to pilot one without proper gloves. Therefore it only stands to reason that they would have needed a place to store such necesary equipment. Of course I have no idea if that is actually correct or not but it made perfect sense to me.
It should now be renamed unread manual and all things lost storage area.

it's called a glove compartment b/c it was originally installed to keep your gloves for driving.

old cars steering wheels weren't made with grip or temperature in mind, and some were made out of smooth metal. they were slick and in cold weather would remain cold the whole ride there.

they needed the gloves.....and somewhere to put them....
