budsmoker 87 - Socialism puts the power in the hands of "the people" ? Hmm. Which ones?
Would these people let me live my own life and not be part of their socialism as long as I don't harm anyone else?
You seem interested in using government to provide sustainable transportation "their the only ones with the funds to provide it"'. Where and how does government acquire these funds?
Concerning sustainable stuff, why not just start doing it, why wait for government to approve it or fund it through involuntary taxation /theft ? Start a carpool, walk, bike. Plant a garden, raise some critters, barter
move the fuck out of high population density areas!!
More liberty by law not authority? What will you do when somebody breaks your law? Excercise government authority? What will you do when somebody exercises liberty by continuing to drive their own gas guzzler and decides not to ride your smart train?
Voluntary socialism, I'm fine with. If that's what a group of peope want for THEMSELVES, have at it. Sustainable living, fine with that too, I live off the grid, drive a shitbox that gets good mileage, raise and eat my own critters, split my firewood by hand and generally smirk at the rat race I left behind.
I don't think government is part of the solution though. Sorry to be a cynic but the noble government you envision does not and will not exist. Gm failed because their product was not as good as the competitions, their debts became greater than their income...The only thing differentiating them from government is they didn't have the power to legally steal money, so they used the government to do it for them. Be careful when you think 'if only" the right people ran government everything would be fine. That's not sustainable thinking.
