I don’t think anyone can predict the effect of something this different. I am sure that the corporate world will try to wring anything of value out of this and slap a restrictive patent on the product or process or parts of a process. Then once it is exclusively owned many different eventualities are possible.
Another thought; bootlegged yeast could be the hottest thing on the Black Market. Could give a new meaning to Perpetual Grow!
Look at how good they have wrung out the insulin market, with patent after patent and each time they re-patent it the cost skyrockets, yet companies like Eli Lilly & Co. boast about how cheap it is now to produce,
thanks to genetic engineering.
Sound familiar?
So why then is insulin like $400 a bottle now that it is so much cheaper to produce?
I am sure Big Pharma and the FDA have plans to keep all cannabinoids tied up in patents and FDA approved drugs for as long as they can.
To prove my point Marinol (patent #US8324408B2), synthetic THC, which was patented in 2005 hasn't even had it's patent lapse yet and as of 2017 they are already setting it up to be re-patented as a medication for sleep apnea. It is currently in FDA trials on it's way to FDA approval... Thus continuing the perpetual patents of THC...
The same will happen with Epidiolex (patent #US9474726B2), CBD for the treatment of seizures, which was patented in 2017.
Big Pharma and the FDA have no plans to let up their control of cannabinoids any time soon.
Despite hemp and CBD "technically" being legal in the U.S now, look at what's going on in New York.
Looking at both sides of this story, on one side people are being way too loose with how they are using CBD (and claiming it can cure just about anything) and on the other the FDA is protecting Big Pharma.
Notice how when the FDA "cracks down" on someone adding CBD to foods or selling a CBD tincture marketed to pets with epilepsy, it is never because they are making health claims about it helping with seizures or epilepsy, this is because CBD is FDA approved for use in treating epilepsy, but they will "crack down" on those selling it for pretty much anything else.
