are they fruit flies, fungus gnats, ect? I have fruit flies, brought in by my dunb ass wife who buys OUTdoor fvcking soil for her INdoor plants. ive been using captian jacks spinosad 1x every 2 weeks when watering. shit stops them dead, the 2nd treatment stops any newly hatched buggers laid by the adults who were killed by the 1st treatment. capt jacks spinosad is good for quite a number of pests.

Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top of soil, lightly water. Then cover top of soil with a inch or two of play sand.
The cinnamon screws up the larvae, and the sand keeps the adults from getting in soil to lay new eggs.

You might have gotten the Fungus Gnats from the soil.
The Maggots in your soil will eat organic material, including your root system.
I agree a good soil drench should do the trick.
In the future I would use a preventative measure.
Encapsulating the soil in Perlite is my Favorite method.
Like the sand, they won't crawl through the perlite.
The Perlite also helps keep moisture in the soil.

I have delt with gnats many times! I use spinosad along with diatomaceous earth and sticky traps. They stay away for awhile then show up again so the battle starts over. I think they come back because I stop treating once I don't see the flyers anymore. Any exposed soil allows the flyers entry to lay more eggs.

I use the yellow sticky bug strips(victcry's flys). Works well and lasts a few grows depending on the infestation. I also rub some of the sticky on the edge of the pots(plastic, not fabric), makes a mess and is a PITA but very effective..
