@curious2garden - this has not been my experience given the age of the plants the OP provided AND the fact that the plants are in veg. I would expect the plants to slow a bit, but not die given that the solution is not run-off and is diluted to 1/4-1/2 strength.
Sharing your experience of having plants die after sitting in run-off for a day is not really relevant because it is not a drain to waste situation, therefore, not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Maybe the plants would die if they're root bound and all roots are submerged in bins as I've outlined, but that is easily avoided by repotting before holiday.
I'm not arguing a simple dripper system on a timer is an obvious choice, but I though
@raggyb was trying to keep it simple.
