I checked it out. The same thing happened in 2000. The Majority Leader became Republican Senator Lott as the VP was Republican

Here's what most people don't know:
Part of the Vice President's duty is that he/she is the President of the Senate and runs its daily proceedings.
In the event you have a split house (50-50) then the Vice President makes the deciding vote, making whatever party holds the office of Vice President the decider in who holds the majority.
