Gov. Abbott: Texas to Block Syrian Refugee Resettlement

Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday that Texas would refuse Syrian refugees after a terrorist attack in Paris killed more than 120 people.

"Given the tragic attacks in Paris and the threats we have already seen, Texas cannot participate in any program that will result in Syrian refugees — any one of whom could be connected to terrorism — being resettled in Texas," Abbott wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama.

Cynthia Leigh, an immigration attorney in Austin, said advocates for refugees “deplore this sort of announcement.” But Leigh said Abbott’s move was likely legal because resettlement policies are at the discretion of local communities.

Abbott's announcement made Texas the third state to declare it would block Syrian refugees from resettling. The governors of Michigan and Alabama said Sunday that they would similarly prevent such resettlement in their states.

I know my local community would round them up never to be seen again. :finger:

Let's be real: You don't want Arabic people in your community because they're not "Texan" "American" (read: white) enough.

Abbott can say all he want, Refugee Act of 1980 - like I pointed out in another thread - and the United States Constitution does not allow states to dictate who and who can't enter the United States. Moreover, in the face of a crisis the Refugee Act of 1980 gives the Federal government expanded power. So, Abbott while he sits there pretending to be a good ol' conservative Christian is really showing himself off to be a terrible Christian.

Moreover, what you're insinuating right now is murdering/interring/kidnapping people who are more than likely completely innocent, because they don't agree with your ideals. You know what that puts you on par with? Daesh. By saying you'd round them up you're acting/speaking exactly like a Muslim extremist/jihadist/terrorist. Try that on for size - argue it all you want, but whatever you say will not make this statement untrue; that's exactly what you're doing - acting completely like the same people you hate, and everyone can now see that.

Only folks on the right are batshit crazy-mosogynist-bigots-UNCHRISTIANLIKE assholes when it comes to opening their doors to folks in need.

Compassionate/conservative my ass, that's an oxymoron if I ever heard one.

I am not a conservative and I do not want these refugees in our country. Not because of the color of their skin but because they have been programmed in believing there is a deity. We have enough religious idiots here to have to deal with more.

Thought this was an oddly accurate description of quite a few of our liberal RIU members, from an Iraqi born writer.

Al-Mutar began with the Islamic terrorist’s declaration that “we did this because our holy texts exhort us to …”

The liberal is having none of that: “No, you didn’t.”

And then things get really interesting:

“Wait, what? Yes we did…”

“No, this has nothing to do with religion. You guys are just using religion as a front for social and geopolitical reasons.”

“WHAT!? Did you even read our official statement? We give explicit Quranic justification. This is jihad, a holy crusade against pagans, blasphemers, and disbelievers.”

“No, this is definitely not a Muslim thing. You guys are not true Muslims, and you defame a great religion by saying so.”

“Huh!? Who are you to tell us we’re not true Muslims!? Islam is literally at the core of everything we do, and we have implemented the truest most literal and honest interpretation of its founding texts. It is our very reason for being.”

“Nope. We created you. We installed a social and economic system that alienates and disenfranchises you, and that’s why you did this. We’re sorry.”

“What? Why are you apologizing? We just slaughtered you mercilessly in the streets. We targeted unwitting civilians — disenfranchisement doesn’t even enter into it!”

“Listen, it’s our fault. We don’t blame you for feeling unwelcome and lashing out.”

“Seriously, stop taking credit for this! We worked really hard to pull this off, and we’re not going to let you take it away from us.”

“No, we nourished your extremism. We accept full blame.”

“OMG, how many people do we have to kill around here to finally get our message across?”
