Thanks for the responses , was curious but it seems the LIMONENE component will dominate the smell , making a " fruitier " or " lemony " smell , which isn't always what I want from my grows. I prefer the different characteristics that strains have , earthy , piney , caramel or whatever. I don't want to MASK or change the flavor profile the weed.
Is their any " supplements " or additives that are nice finishers or stick with molasses ?
I actually have gotten some more sugar from UVB but I don't like running those bulbs a lot because of its exposure issues.
Lets look at this as an example:
Im sure that we all know about DJ Short and his breeding work with blueberry strains. Read his book "Cultivating Exceptional Cannabis".. anyways I'll summarize.
He advocates organic soil growing.. and the use of guano's bat and seabird during blooming.
He also prefers sunlight grown cannabis vs HID grown.
If he does use HID, he uses a HPS:MH in 1:1. However he does mention it give it better color, no reference to flavor
So if you use DJ's data points... Indoor HPS Hydro weed is the least favorable conditions,
Lastly I'll throw this in.. This applies to wine grapes but still.. in viticulture, there seems to be some suggestion that the high mineral content of the soil gives the wine a superior flavor.. Of course that high mineral soil is in France, like the champagane region... I guess the subsoil has lots of sea shells..
Here's my data point..
I too have found that hydro tends to exaggerate the lemon/citrus notes.. as well as calyx size. Potency and weight is good however the structure and aroma tends to be diffferent. Sometimes the colors and crystals are better in hydro.
I found that HPS/MH in a ratio of 2:1 works best if one does not want to use UV lights for supplementation. I have also experimented with 10,000Kelvin lights and potency seemed to be improved, as far as sativa dominant strains, however it seemed to lengthen ripen times. Ive had great success with 2:1 and everytime I do a grow I try to incorporate MH.
Ive noticed when using only MH with plants like chives grown in hydro.. They have a sharper onion flavor than the sungrown counterpart albiet smaller. I too have noticed this with MH only with cannabis.. smaller but very potent small flowers.
Lastly I'll say that I've tried many resin boosters, flavor enhancers, hardners (non PGR) etc.. And since I run dirt and hydro in some setups I can see if it really works.. they kinda have some effect but its either not as good as advertised or has an unwanted side effect... Like foxtailing. etc.. I'm curious, so I'll continue to try them but I know that a quality hydro nutrient should have most of the things needed to create flavor.. This goes with soil, a well fed soil should grow a plant without any additives and give superior structure and flavor.
