Grey lowes buckets

Just made up three new buckets, two of which were grey lowes buckets and see snot floating about in the res on those two. The black bucket is fine.

I had heard from a few people who use them and said no light leaks thru.

The thickness distribution over the bucket didn't seem uniform. When I put the bucket over my head under a light there were these light dots on the walls of the bucket, like it was less thick in those spots.

Weird, maybe I got a defective batch?

I'm going to change the res out and see if it was just a bad res even though I filled all three at the same time. Not entirely convinced its the buckets, but as this is my first time in years with snot in my res and I just started using these buckets, i'm kinda leaning towards it being the buckets.

If your worried about the light scuff them lightly with sandpaper and paint them with flat black spray paint.

Don't leave them black on the outside, that will just help heat your water. Paint black, then paint white or apply mylar with spray adhesive.

Only skuff outside if that wasn't obvious, scratching the inside makes for higher risk of bacteria issues.

You can get a roll of thin reflective insulation to wrap your buckets ($16 at lowes, wrapped 6 buckets & lids). Will keep heat out, cool in, and provide a light leak barrier too. Working for me so far, along with chiller. The black buckets really absorb the heat, and this insulation works great. No problem keeping the water at 65 deg.

pic from beginning of the grow. Buckets are black, no light leaks, from the grow shop.

the grey buckets are not light proof... hold one up to an hid and move your hand behind it. you can see the shadow of your hand through the bucket.

blackforest does same as me... i found 3 layers of reflectix wrapped up with gorilla tape works well.
