Grow cabinet

I used a serated drywall knife to cut the fan holes and a drill for attaching screws.
If thats to much work than u might want to rethink growing. It too requires work and way more time.
To each their own i was only trying to help, if u got the cash and wanna buy one go for it and happy growing

I just don't feel like it would be anywhere near as proffesional as the prefab ones, and I know what it takes to grow not my first time , just bad choice in username when I joined this site

Just wanted to contribute something. Feel free to take it with a grain of salt, but if I can save any pain, it will be worth it.

I purchased a grow cabinet 3-4 years ago.

The grow box is "massive, at 46″ wide x 30″ deep x 78″ tall, giving the grower enough room for maximum results. The Cedar Cabinet provides the stealth design you want with none of the negatives of metal boxes."

They have several videos that make their boxes seem ideal.

While I am still using it, I regret the purchase.

My chief complaint? It is not light tight, even though they have a video showing that it is. (Fraud!) it is also not light tight between the vegging chamber and the flowering chamber. (Double Fraud and Shenanigans!!!!)

Other problems:
  1. It is not stealth. Attractive, but sticks out.
  2. The component suck! (Sort of expected, but not this bad.)
  3. Accessibility to plants is compromised. (Probably true so all cabinets.)
  4. Had to spend money to overcome shortcomings: blackout for windows, locks for room door, attempts patch light leaks.
If you need stealth, I would recommend building your own. If you have a secure room, but don't want to permanently transform it, I would recommend a tent.

If I could take back my foolish purchase, I would purchase a tent (Gorilla, Secret Jardin) and source my own components. Quality tents provide 360 degree access. Never thought I'd want it, but sorely need it!

Height has also proven to be an issue. I prefer to grow without topping, so if a sativa phenotype pops up, they will grow into the lights, even with training. (Albeit, newb training.)

While my experience only applies to a single charlatan, there are charlatans aplenty! Caveat emptor!

Listen to advice given here by others more experienced than I. Too often, we feel their hard-gained knowledge does not apply to us.

Happy trails to all.

I've decided to try and build my own, but am now wondering what led lights to buy as I want a space for a mother plant and a few small to medium sized plants and a separate space to flower, also what's a good carbon filter? And would this box need ventilation?

What dimensions do you want for each space....flower/veg.....W x L x H...... whats the budget....

I will give you an idea :peace:

I'd like it to be about 6 feet tall, 3 feet deep and 4-5 feet wide, and my budget is about $3000

You could easily build a light using either Vero 29's or Cree CXA3070's for around 1k.....using reflectors and top of the line Meanwell drivers....
Using the absolute best heatsinks and newest diodes, It would be hard to push 1.5K for the whole deal....

I have contemplated putting together a real HID killer for a 4x4 space.....and have crunched lots of #'s.......[[it could even be a tad cheaper, since technically your space isn't a 4x4....12 sq ft subtract $200-400....]]]

Vero29 Version 2's and CXB 3070's are also on their way, and while both are improvements on light output and efficiency, both will also be an extra bump in price as well.....
That light would be about,10-15% more efficient that the BEST commercial offering. [[[[possibly as much as 20+% with 2nd versions]]]]

Someone could build you a custom aluminum cabinet for way cheap...and then add in all your equipment.....

Look around for a metal working machine shop....Sometimes with Money, craftsman like that are easy to talk about custom projects. But be well versed before you go in, so you don't just see $'s in their eyes.....

I bet you could find a metal shop in the slow season to build you an all aluminum box for less than 1k.....

and if it comes down to being a plywood box [also a good choice] you could have a hardware store cutup the dimensions for you [imho, the hardest part of box building], then just go on Youtube and spend a few hours watching step by step of people putting together similar projects.....There are literally thousands......

Would aluminum be better than wood? I was thinkin of just building a wooden one, figured it would be lower temps in there, just gotta figure out a way to make light and smell proof

Would be just fine, even just a pine or aspen plywood cabinet will last for years, let alone oak or other hardwood plywood....
Sealing everything both from the inside and outside, makes it lightproof, but also airtight, to help with ventilation.....

Even if you only had a hammer and nails and a Home Depot or something similar where they will cut the wood, You could still build a top notch cabinet this way...Use doubled up weatherstripping to oppose each other where there is an opening.....
Smell proofing is easy, don't cheap out on a filter and by a bigger size....It will last longer and have more surface area to combat smell....

I just realized that you probably wan't to make your 3x4/5, both a veg and flower space in one....

3k for flowering, even though it will veg and 5k for veg [is what I prefer]

In veg, you can get away with less than 10 watts in a square foot @18 inches or more.....In flower running at 18"+, I would average around 35-40watts per sq. ft of light intensity....

I would want 2 separate lights, one for the veg area and one for the flower area
