Morning all - started some great looking seeds (larger then normal, spotted and striped) from Nutty North Genetics (https://www.nnselections.com/) who took a new strain from Mean Gene (Mean Mug F1) and made an F2 out of it which I'm going to go hunting with.

I'm super excited about a root beer flavored strain, especially after my last grow of Unicorn Gelatin which smells and tastes like shit. This will be my first grow in the new tent, went with the Gorilla Tent with a 2' extension, it's a 5x5, which of course meant I needed a new light since I upgraded from a 3x3. I debated HLG's Scorpion Diablo and Chilled's X series. Went with HLG.
The grow style for this grow is living soil, I'm using BAS 3.0, second grow with the soil but I've reamended it to keep it hot.
I'll be growing in four 25 gallon fabric pots but plan to put saran wrap around the top 1/3rd soil inside the pot to help prevent wet/dry spots throughout the soil and even out the tendency of the soil to dry top down. I'm also planning on using a combination of clover and hay for crop cover.
Of the 4 seeds I'm growing this turn, two are Mean Mug F2 (#2) and two are Mean Mug F2 (#5). All four originated from the same grandparents from Mean Gene but from other grow reports there's material variation between the #2 and #5. This first grow is to see if I like the smoke and a general judgement on the health of the plants. As they're regular seeds, there's a decent chance some will be male. Males will be brought nearly to flower and should any male show big (eg a father plant worth keeping), I'll harvest pollen pre-chop though that's unlikely given the limited number of seeds being popped.
Once this grow is done, I'll evaluate and go on a 16 seed hunt thereafter with a more limited veg period (and of course much smaller pots) to potentially propagate and bring to F3. While I recognize that a 16 seed hunt is a little like playing the lottery (not great odds of finding something killer), if I enjoy the smoke and love the flavor, socking away a bunch of root beer seeds would be a great outcome. This will be my first time propagating, so I'm excited to give it a college try.
Today - Day 1, soaked the seeds overnight in shot glasses, put them on wet paper towels in between two dishes. Wish me luck!
