Hey everybody. I'm looking to upgrade from 2x 150W hps up to a 1000W hps or cmh. iv never ordered or really looked around at a grow light websites. always thought it was a bit sketchy lol but i checked a few out and found sum killer deals. http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HLHPS10SEW&eq= <---- this is what I'm thinking of getting. but I'm wondering if the "budget model" is even worth buying. and if the body has ordered from bihydro.com, how was your experience?
can somebody point me in a better direction if there a more legit site out there. thanks for any help!!

That light you're looking at is as bare bones as it gets. The ballast is exposed but comes with a 5 year warranty. The hood makes a difference in yield and that hood is just reflective sheet metal that doesn't reflect very efficiently.

I bought from them 3 times 10 years ago and the ballasts are still humming as if it was day one. When your finances aren't contained, you can always upgrade the hood to something better, but these will work better than your bghydro light.

The website that I posted previously has a 400watt HPS for $189 under the Diamond Plate Light Hood section. Those hoods are better than the link that you posted and can be upgraded later when you have more money (which is what I did for one of mine). 2 out of the 3 lamps I purchased yeas ago still use that diamond plate hood and perform just fine (though not as good a an air-cooled, highly reflective, enclosed glass hood).

yep, hes right, even if you have to save a little more money cause it costs more, do it right. htg has some nice stuff like this one, Digital Greenhouse Electronic 1000 watt HPS Grow Light System, has great features and some nice upgrades. ebay has some good deals, but htg's looks better than most there.

Just remember that 'you pay for what you get'. The econo package includes a refurbished ballast :-? and only a 3 year warranty. If a company is selling refurbished products, that means at some point that product failed and the customer sent it back to them to fix.

Where are you getting that info from Brewer? I just spoke to the owner of HTG in Shrewsbury MA and he seems to think it is a brandy new light with a 2 year ballast warranty and a 1 year bulb warranty. Sure I will agree it is not as high quality as a $400 light but how much quality does it take to make a light bulb glow? Also if my ballast fails in 2 years and a day then I would say that 2 years aint too bad for $120. Sorry Brewer if it seems I argue with you alot (kinda ironic we seem to post on alot of the same threads) but I am a facts guy. You are a very educated grower and I respect what you say so dont take my arguments for anything more than face value bud!!!

Yeah I like HTG Supply, i've bought a couple lights from them. There on ebay and that's where I first found them actually. It might be cheaper going through ebay too if you can find a good deal.

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to the econo package here:

I believe the OP commented on it a few posts above.

yea i noticed it has a refurbished ballast, but honestly after looking around at local stores, i wud much rather save a few hundred bucks and have it break down sooner. idk bout yall local shops, but $600-$900 for a 1000W is a bit of a rip off IMO lol
iv got my eye on the 1000W with hps/MH bulbs from HTG. after measuring my room i though about something tho, wud i get more total weight with 2x 400W spread out over a bigger coverage, with more total plants. or with less, but much bigger plants under one 1000W??
