Grow Room Choice

I want to use the area under our foyer as a grow room.

We live in a split-level and the basement was re-modeled into several rooms. I have access to under the foyer from a closet in my "den". This area includes the hot water heater and a space sufficient for a 3 X 3 grow area.

I plan to grow 6 plants using a 250 watt HID with no plans for intake air or exhaust venting. To keep this hobby away from my wife, I have taken up the hobby of a hydroponic herb garden (parsley, basil, rosemary, sage, Thai pepper and Tobasco pepper plants). This is set up in a back bedroom turned into an office. The other herbs will be done discretely.

Will an odor of THC be detected from the hidden garden?
Should I be concerned with heat from a 250 watt HID bulb? What temperature can I expect this bulb to generate? Is the room large enough to disipate the heat from the bulb?

odor yes, heat yes, bulb itself will generate an extra 10 degree of heat, room not large enough. not without ventilation.

for a 3 X 3 foot area a 400 watt HID is a much better fit. also, it will stink and wont do that well unless you have some sort of exhaust fan blowing into a activated charcoal filter. if its in its own room you should be fine on heat as long as you are sure to ventilate, excess heat kills! also, id consider telling your wife your plans. think about this, you sit down and have a talk with her about the plan with her knowing to say not a word *or* her finding it one day and telling her friends all about it?

Seems like I need to re-think my original plans...

tell your wife and give up your other vices like i did. tell her instead of drinking and smoking at the bar. you guys could drink some wine and smoke herb at home. itll make sex amazing. i told mine and she rarely asks about my grow op. its one of those things like jerking it that she pretends to not know about. haha

I gave up other vices the past couple of years: stopped cigerettes last March, and stopped drinking the summer before. I gave up pot smoking 14 years ago and gave up all my pot friends. I've only started smoking again about 3 years ago. My wife had an experience with her ex and it turned her dead against weed. Gee, I'm 58 and retired; her concerns shouldn't have an impact on me.

Anyway, I've been buying for several years now, and have kept it from her. I don't think she'd approve of my growing, especially since the house is hers.

So, back to the odor question, I've read where folks are growing in a closet. Can you stand outside the closet and smell the fragrance of growing weed? I can work out the heat problem, but I need to know more about the odor issue. Anybody?

ok man... first thing you want too grow too many plants to hideyou should only grow one plant... if you really wanna hide this from your wife grow with cfl get about 8 23 watts 6500k and 2 5500k, and grow with them you are gona have to seal the grow room and put a intake n exhaust holes in there...with a filter for the odor. i think one plant will give you enoght weed for your self..

There's more to this than I expected. Not plug-and-play. I best pull back my plans and think this out. Venting the area is not an easy option.

If you are 58 and you want to toke a little, seriously just do it. You should talk to your wife about you "thinking" about trying to grow it. Make it seem like it is just a thought and gage her reaction.

ya make it see like a thought and if she gets all dramatic just laught n tell her u were jk .. walk away never let her find your plants.

you will smell it. You either need an exhaust+filter or a ionizer. Or both. The exhaust will make sure there isnt a heat issue. And maybe a lock just in case she decided she needs to take a look and see how hot the water is.

I know my wife. With 16 and 18 y/o girls living at home, she'll kick me out. I'll just keep it quite; try growing one plant and deal with whatever occurs in the trial.

I still would like to use 250 W HID's. I can rig up an exhaust fan on the light that whould draw the air from the space. Maybe a filter on the exhaust end will take care of any odor. The exhaust fan may make the space negative enough to the rest of the house that my concerns with odor will not be a problem. And I'll check up on an ionizer.

Am I thinking wrong?
