Hey guys, needing some help.

Gonna be growing my plant in an area that gets pretty cold at night, picture a 2ft wide, 4ft high grow box with 2 computer fans, intake and outake and the air thats passing through here is gonna be fairly cold.

I gonna be having two 125w CFL's within inches of this plant, is the heat created by these two CFL's enough to keep this plant warm?

Does the cold air even affect the plant?

Could do with some info please, much appreciated.

im doing the same exact thing in a smaller box... the cold air does affect the plant quite a bit if its too cold.. im dealing with that problem right now but mine will be done in 3 weeks

hmmm.......nice plants man.

You said your dealing with the cold problem? how?

I thought about getting a heater but the best one I can find runs at 2.4kw and having that thing on like constantly will send my electricity bill through the roof big time.

You not think the two 125w CFL's will produce enough heat if they within inches of the plant??

hmmmmmm.......when you say the cold affects the plants is it the stem/leaves/buds that get affected or is it the roots that get affected?

Slower gowth and hermies ca happen from cold. What temp does it get down to at night?

over 60F is good at night 65 is better.

Remenber if you put a heater in there it wont cost much if its a small room i have one in my mother tent with a thermostat and only comes on below 65ish so most of the time its off.

I don't exactly know what temp it gets down to at night because it's outside in my shed and all the shed has is one layer of insulation, I couldn't tell you exactly how cold it gets at night.

I guess the only warmth the plant will have is the insulation from two of the shed walls, i'm building my box in the corner so two of the shed walls will be part of my grow box, and the heat produced by two 125w CFL's, might be reducing the wattage to something lower yet, and the fact that it's in a small area might keep the heat in.

I think you misinterpreted my questions aswell >.<

What I meant was what part of the plant does the cold actually affect because if it's the roots that get affected then i'll just get a fish tank heater, because i'm using a fishtank in my aeroponics system, and i'll just throw that in there but if it's the stem/leaves/buds that get affected then I guess a fish tank heater ain't gonna keep them warm is it >.<

cold can affect any and all of those things... not to mention anything colder than 50 degrees basically slows down growth tot eh point where its not fun anymore in my opinion...

75-78 degrees go down to walmart and get a space heater with a thermostate on it this should only cost like 20 bucks for a nice one.

Oh I live in the uk, I seen heaters for like £15 that i'de buy in a second just these things run at like 2.4kw and in an area with cold space running through this thing will be on for like many hours of the day and it will send my electricity bill through the roof.

have it on a timer if youre worried about it.. time it to only come on when the lights are off! ;)

Well, I suppose I could do that so i'de only need it during flowering because veg is gonna be a 24/0 light cycle and I been on the website of a store quite close to me, that I forgot about, and they got 150w in car heaters, wondering if this will do the trick.

These little things are portable and I been in my shed at like 11pm recently when I was putting my dog in and I could tell, easily, that the temp was definently above 0 celcius (32F), probably even above 5 celcius (41F) and this is when it's been snowing recently and it is icy outside and plus I was wearing shorts.
(May seem a bit stupid me wearing shorts in that weather but I been in the house all day so no need to be wrapped up warm).

Also, I changed my mind on the lights I am going to use from 2 125w envirolites to 2 42w 6500k CFL'S and 4 23w 2700k CFL'S and I will have 2 6500k's at the top and the other 4 2700k's stationed all around plant so I suppose there will be more heat all around the plant this way and as it gets colder at night I might have the lights running through the night and have them switched off during day so that I won't have to use the heater as much, maybe not at all.

You may be thinking it is silly to have the lights switched on during the night as I would have to do any work with them during the night when the lights are switched on but when I say night I mean like 8-9pm to 8-9am the next day, this way I would have the lights keeping them warm during the night, 8-9pm to 8-9 am, and then when they turn off I would have the heater set on a timer to only turn on for like 2 hours when the lights switch off as it is quite nippy in the morning.

You think this may be a good idea?

i think its a great idea! i make my lights stay on at night, 1 to combat heat, and 2 because im a night owl musician stoner who lives at night lol.. :P

anywho, i think mixing the spectrums is the way to go thats what im doing and have been doing the whole time on my cfl grow! it sounds to me that if you do what youre planning on and you pay close attention to signs of stress on your babies then youll be just fine! :]

also if your shed is small a small heater should work just fine! your plants can survive through some pretty harsh conditions but its ideal to keep them at least 65F.. although like i said they can survive in a wide range of conditions.. they tend to just thrive when youve got the temp right! hope this helps a bit! :]

wow, ain't it funny how you responded like 2 minutes after I came back on? :p

I just been back out in my shed like 30 mins ago when it was 1am (I live in uk) and the temp was around 3-5 degrees celcius, inaccurate estimate, with the door open, so I do think that the enclosed space and the amount of heat from the lights, especially as they are at close range, will keep my baby living just fine at night and then the extra hour or so of a heater in the morning will make it nice and cosy for her :)

Plus, i'll put her into light at 8pm giving me a good 3 hours, 8pm-11pm, of work time whenever I need to tend to her.

I knew this would of been a good idea and the fact that the heater is only 150w is great! :D

Hmmmm......

As the store, where I get heater from, is quite local to me do you think I should just hold out on buying it and then only buy it if I see that my baby is suffering from the cold?

After all, I only need it during flowering because vegging lights are on 24/7 so suppose heat ain't a problem in that stage.

The effects of cold. I live in the states but I used a conversion thingy, you don't want your temps getting below 16 celsius which is sixty f. Between 10-16 celsius, growth slows/stops. Below that you are in real danger of losing your plants if that kind of cold is continual. Below five your plants cells are in danger of freezing and exploding.

Like I said, my estimate of 0-5 celcius was very inaccurate, it was just a guess that I took when I stood in the shed, and I can't seem to find a thermometer!
The only one I have/can find is like glued to my freezer! >.<

And plus, the fact that my box is in a corner, the box will be fairly small so it's a small space plus 6 light bulbs at pointblank range, you don't think my plant will live with that at night?

Don't know. I do know that kind of cold is going to have a negative effect on your plants. At best it will slow their growth which will effect the yield. At worst it could freeze their cells. Time will tell, good luck.
