Grow seed in dark after planting?

I've heard you can plant your seed and let it grow in the dark until you see it sprouting. Is this true? Sorry, I'm a noob.

I started my seeds off in the dark to begin with and then moved them into the light about 1-2 days after sprouting - I figured once they had leaves they were ready for some light.
