I'm growing in my closet..
Current grow space is:
3ft 2in tall
2ft 5in wide
2ft deep.
---
I have black plastic (trashbag) to keep the light from shining out of the cracks in the closet..
I leave a big space open for ventilation which you can see in the picture, I also have a fan that goes up there to blow air in..
---
Ill get pictures of the box space empty tommorow with less lights on..
I have 5 42w CFLS inside, I wanna upgrade to an HPS but I wanna get the largest watt HPS possible without causing a possibility of a fire.

Height during flowering is going to be a problem with any crop brought to maturity in that box......got to figure that out before the light....

That height space is real tight for flowering plants + distance from light + light fixture profile. 2/3's of your height, depending on strain, is going to occur in flowering.

with that size space, you'd be better off growing an autoflowering strain which only grow between 1 - 2ft tall.
I agree on the cooltube, heat is going to be a problem, even with a 250w hps system.
good luck

ya my 250w can get pretty hot man and in a little area like that well... My 250 is is in a room 6 feet x 4 feet and 8 feet tall, i only use a fraction 3 feet by 2 feet to grow, and when they were veg and the MH was on 24/7 if i didnt crack the door every couple hours it got too how. U would most def have to rig some ducting if u wanted to use a 250. your best bet might be to buy some feminized seeds, grow 1, and get a 75w hps for in there and then lavish her with cfls if the temps not too bad.. just an idea

hey man. i'm working in a space a little smaller than yours and ive got a 150hps. I feel with my space i am pushing it with a 150. i certainly couldnt handle a 250 unless i got a cooltube and upped my ventilation - but i also don't think i'd see much yield improvements either. having a larger light is more about being able to cover more space for bigger/more plants. if you have a small space to start with you're plants can only get so big. a 150 hps will probably saturate them with plenty of light.

Watercooled has a good point. With that space, you've only got so much potential anyway. 150 watts is probably plenty to maximize the potential of that space. Lowe's had 150W HPS fixtures w/bulb for $50 last time I was there.

I would be really tempted to use CFL's, though, because of the heat issues. You could put CFL's in a clamp on reflector light and set them right on the wire mesh shelf pointing down. Then cover the whole thing up with your black plastic.
