Not neccesarily, I mix "store bought" topsoil with compost, perlite and "steer manure". I don't know exactly what "Black Dirt" is - who makes it?

yeah, what he said. I know a lot of guys like to mix worm castings into pro mix and other stuff too. I like to add more perlite myself and that's it. If it was just a small bag and they didn't over charge you why bother though, you want to be on good terms with your "dealer" right ?

Here's what I used when I used to grow in soil:

2 parts Schultz's Potting Soil Plus.

1 part Perlite

1 part Vermiculite

1 part worm castings

One SMALL handful of Granulated Dolomite Lime per two gallons of soil mix.

It worked wonders. No nutrients needed for the first 45 days.

Black dirt would be what all farmers wish their land was full of. Black dirt is what organic growers accomplish when they have organically treated their gardens for 5 years. Which means no non-organic chemicals of any kind.

So, no they weren't trying to rip you off. If you did as suggested then they helped. Let me know where you got your black dirt, how much you got and what it cost. Thanx!

well for my soil i just used some left over dirt out of planters i had around the house added some crushed egg shells and some vermiculite and so far i have to say the results have been fantastic great drainage and the eggshells helped with the nutes for the seedlings first 3 weeks of growth

a no from me,the only thing I would ever add is more perlite, which I do and I still don't have to water every day, more like every week.
